I know that that the RM-MC35ELK and the RM-MC40ELK work 100% but is that it???
I have seen a really nice black remote on eBay which would look awesome  with my Black HD3 but is it fully compatiable?
    Thanks.

Seems really compatible, volume, skip, ffwd and others should normally work.

Not sure about displaying menu and titles.
Honestly, 14 squid is not much it's worth risking ;)

I have an RM-MC10L that works..

The play, pause, fast forward, stop and reverse buttons work, and it displays the track info and so on on the lcd display.

I'd imagine if it's a sony net-md remote it'll do 90% of what's required at least (ie all bar the specific MD stuff - renaming tracks and so on).
