Looking at having a go at making a basic(ish) HTPC

However I need to have it remote controlled - all being well will run Win Media Centre and I have a Harmony Remote Control that I would want to use

Is there a good yet cheap IR reciver thats easy to obtain (preferably in the UK)

I’m looking at building a very basic htpc, primarily for music (bit-to-bit) and hd video recording. I stumbled onto something called h.i.p. Looks like it can get real advanced, real quick. Not really sure what to think of it.

    Thanks

Will take a look - all im hoing to be using is an old p4 2.6GHz with 1024 Ram along with a 9800pro and an Audigy 2 Sound Card

Just need some form of wireless - remote control over the whole thing

Want to do it as cheap and easy and as quickly as possible (ideally do with having the stuff by a week Sunday)

You can pick up an IR reciever from ebay for a few quid, or make it yourself if your that way inclined. Works great with a harmony (although I'm using Meedio not MCE)

I bought a really basic serial IR receiver from ebay which I no longer need.

You can have it for a fiver.
It worked great with my Harmony and Girder. I've bought an MCE remote since so I use the IR on there.

You should be able to program it to control whatever you want, including MCE, but you will need to use girder. I will send you a copy of the required pluggin to enable the Harmony to work with girder.
I was a little daunted by girder initially, but there's lots of help files available and it's a piece of cake once you get your head round it.

Paypal is fine. I will pm you my details.

Duncan was asking where he could purchase an IR receiver and I said I had one to sell. Although outside of the Classifieds I have stated a price and Duncan chose to accept. The sale became incidental to the thread and I don't recall reading any rules which may have been broken on this thread.

Mods maybe you can clarify this, but I have already pm'd my payment details to Duncan.

I think it is assumed that trading is only to happen with in the classifieds but lets see what a mod has to say about it!

Trading should only happen in the classifieds forums.
Imposing a trading ban on you both would seem to be pointless at this point.
Trade outside the classifieds forums again and both parties involved will get a temporary posting ban.
Put simply, if you trade outside of the classifieds and the trade goes bad and you come to us for help in resolving the trade, we will not help you.
It has happened more than once.
