Remote Control Buttons not working?

Some of the buttons on the remote (Guide and some of the other buttons for on demand etc.) are not working.

Is this a general thing that you have to go through the home menu, is it a fault with the remote, or is there a way to configure it to shortcut to them quickly?

Sounds like a faulty remote, had similar thing happen to mine twice.
