My favourite genre of films are war films, specifically WW2 and Vietnam but can anyone indicate if any classic titles have been re-released with decent sound mixes to take advantage of 5.1, 6.1, dd, dts etc?
I ask this as I made the mistake of buying the special edition of platoon which is advertised as 5.1 but sounds like c**p.

I got Kellys Heros and the 5.1 mix is pretty good. The sound over all is low but if you turn the volume up its turns out not a bad mix at all.
Das Boot Superbit has a very good sound mix DD5.1 and DTS. Even the normal release with just DD5.1 is fairly good.
Saving Private Ryan has a really good DTS mix. Its also out there in DD5.1 which I don't think much of.

Can't think of anything else of the top of my head, but if I do I'll post something.

We Were Soldiers has an awsome track. So does Pearl Harbour. A Thin Red Line also.

I'm a big fan of military aircraft and was hoping that the thread would throw up films featuring my all time favourite aircraft - the spitfire, the Lancaster bomber and the harrier jump jet, as I'd love to see these on the big screen - To date, I have the perfect film featuring the harrier - ok, its not a war film but as far as I'm concerned, it rocks! This being True lies.
I've not watched pearl harbour but I've been told that this features dogfight sequences from the battle of britain which surprised me as I thought the film was based on the titular skirmish - is this true?
Just hope that the forthcoming tom cruise ww2 flick does the spitfire justice.

OK Chard, I'll order the battle of britain next week in addition to Pearl Harbour - its generally acknowledged that Pearl Harbour is an excruciating piece of crud which I happen to agree with but the action sequences look and sound absolutely spectacular - knowing this, I ACTUALLY intend to pick this up simply to watch the action sequences and I'll be fast forwarding through the toe curling melodrama.

Badass, you may think that I'm not in a position to judge this film given that I have'nt even watched it yet and you may be right, but my opinion is based on the overwhelming consensus from critics in all walks of life as regards to pearl harbour - a film whose only redeeming feature is the action based around the battle sequences.
I did exactly the same thing with regards to 'Phantom of the Menace' a film that was universally panned but despite that, I still bought it because of its state of the art visual & sound fx, especially the speeder race, which took the edge off the gut wrenchingly bad acting!

Count me in as a Pearl Harbor fan and if i listened to critics i probably wouldn't have watched many films this year.

Make your own mind up folks, critics can sometimes be snobbish :)

The battle of Britain moments in Pearl Harbour and the fair battles later in the film do make you long for another great war film featuring the air war.

I do hope that the Cruise film next year doesn't make a hash of it. Unfortunately the idea of the story , stinks before it starts though !!

Chard, I WAS looking forward to tom cruises forthcoming film but you say the story sucks - this is not what I wanted to hear as I've been looking forward to a decent B.O.B flick and I thought this was going to be it - whats wrong with it?

Another under-rated gem (imho) is Dark Blue, an excellent air-war movie:)

I picked up 'Hamberger Hill' a while back in a highstreet sale (Vigin I think), and was really looking forward to it as it has a score by Phillip Glass - but I was quite dissapointed as I thought it sounded 'muffled' on my system which I found really distracting. However, I've just found out there is a dutch r2 release which has DTS, so it might be worth you checking that one out. Anyone got this release and care to comment ?
