    Firstly, appologies if this has been asked before (or is indeed obvious)...couldn't find anything via the search. If it has, please point me in the right direction.

    Why do film studios stagger their cinema release dates, i.e. USA release then six months later here in the UK etc. Surely if they were all released at the same time, DVDs could also get world wide releases at the same time. No need for region coding or RCE which must add to the overall cost.

    Just a thought, can't remember ever hearing or reading the reasoning behind it.

    Re: DVD releases, it's not quite as simple as tempting cinema goers away from the silver screen and into their home cinemas. For any given movie there could well be different companies distributing the home video version in each country. A famous example would be Titanic; distributed by Paramount in the US, and Fox in the UK. (In this case the companies shared production cost of the movie itself).
