I am just about to order a REL Stentor 3 after selling my MJ Ref 1. Has anybody heard this sub and if so what did you think of it. It will be used in a room about 15' x 12'. Any other alternatives I should think about, bering in mind I work for Sevenoaks and am partly led by which brands I can buy at staff/trade price.

I asssume that as B&W dealers there are a couple of big B&W beasties that come into the equation cheaper than the Stentor including the ASW850

I'm not sure that B&W have high level connections though so if you listen to a lot of music and would prefer to connect up at speaker level you may have to pass on this model

It's always interesting to hear why a particular sub is being sold. :)

(Apart from just being too bløødy nosey) :clown:

So, why did you sell the Ref1 Crustyloafer?

I have had a Stentor III for a year now, and it never fails to impress me or anyone else that has heard "or fealt" it. I've got it partnered with some Kef reference 3.2's, and with some carefull tweaking the transition from them to the sub is utterly seamless. I have the x-over set at 36hz. My room is 20" x 14" with the sub about six inches away from the left hand front corner. If there is a downside to this sub, its the fact that i've had to fill a lot more cracks in my ceiling since buying it, and thats not a joke. I'm sure you can buy with confidence, but I hope your in a detatched house. Enjoy.

Just felt the need for somehting bigger and better. When you work in retail and you see some of the prices you can get stuff at it's hard not to want to upgrade all the time. I try to keep most of my gear for about a year and then sell it on for something better.

I am also selling my Acoustic Energy AE1s if anyone is interested. PM me if you are looking for a really good pair of studio monitors.

I did think about the B&W subs but as my branch is not an 800 series dealer they will not sell me one direct. I would have to buy it from Stereo Stereo in Glasgow who would not do me such a good deal. It will also be very heavily used for music purposes with my AE1s until I find a buyer for them although i suspect that my AV use will increase significantly now that i am about to order a projector too.

Getting a discount on B&W Nautilus series speakers is nigh on impossible. The best I got offered was 5% and thats only if I ordered a sub, centre and fronts together ! B&W simply refuse to sell the 800 series to non Nautilus authorised B&W dealers even as a one off order.

Pity about the 800 series. I rate as one of the best subs ever heard.

Amen to that- try being a manufacturer though!

Is this the descendant of the Stygian? We've got one of those in "the referance cupboard" and very nice it is too. Handsome for a subwoofer as well.

I am really ****** off now. I took my sub ( MJ Ref 1) into my shop (had to pay for a taxi too) so that I was ready to send it out to the buyer only to find out that the prospectiver buyer of my sub has pulled out. He thinks that because his REL Q150 has a 150 watt amp and my MJ Ref 1 only has a 120 watt amp the MJ won't be better. I feel like throttling someone afer spending so much time disconnecting it from my system, boxing it up as new in its original packaging only to find I've completely wasted my time. He didn't even have the decency to call me on my mobile just posted a PM to me.

I know this isn't the Classified, but if anybody out there still wants a mint condition MJ Ref 1 for £350 including carriage then PM me. It is in the classified ads on here.

I find it odd and a bit of a pain that B&W 800 series speakers are relatively difficult to get hold of. I'd hoped to get a listen to one at Sevenokas Southampton, but they are not 800 series dealers either.
I don't understand how a retailer can be able for instance, to stock B&W 600 and 700 series speakers, but not 800 series speakers?
If a dealer has a sales account with a manufacturer, I would have thought that the dealer should have easy access to any availble merchandise that the manufacturer produces.

Sorry crusty, it's a little off topic, but it got me thinking after the related response earlier.

B&W 800 series dealers are so few in number due to the huge financial committment involved in taking on an 800 series account. In order for a dealer to be able to sell 800 series they have to commit to having on display at all times about 14 of the sixteen products available. Even at special demo rates that's a huge undertaking for any retailer given the relative infrequency of which they sell the top end models.

I am pre and post production support for Mordaunt Short. In the continued absence of a Cambridge Audio counterpart you'll find me wearing a Cambridge top at the heathrow show for example (Marantz handle the MS work at that show). Will be business as usual at Manchester though.

Have you received the Stentor yet? What do you think of it? How big an improvement is it over your old sub?
