    Hi,

I currently have an old REL 50 sub in my system. It is running with Kef Q5's at the front, a Q9c Centre and Kef Dipole rears using a Pioneer VSXD 2011 Amp.

The first question does the REL 50 stand up to todays Subs? Is it the right sort of Sub to compliment my speakers? If it isn't good enough what Subs would people reccomend?

    Thanks

    Martos

It was a good sub in it's day but time marches on and you can get so much more for your money nowadays. Depending on exactly you want to do with it something like the SVS PB-10 at £420 from AV-Sales in our powerbuys will play much louder, much deeper and with far less audible distortion that your Q50.

What about the Kef Subs? Are they any good, and would they compliment my system?

Any decent subwoofer will compliment your system but most of the KEF subs are designed to partner satellites to produce sound under 80Hz and aren't what many of us would call true subwoofers.

If you are thinking of one of the cheaper KEF subs I doubt whether it will provide anything extra sonically than you are already getting from your Q50

For £500 budget, get a BK Monolith, you WILL notice the improvement and have £100 left for a BFD box.

There is a second hand SVS 25-31pc+ on sale here which would more than meet your requirements.

I changed over from my Kef 2010 that came with my egg's to a 20-39PC+ and the difference is like night and day, although at the time i thought the Kef was the best thing since sliced bread.
