Bought an iMac last summer from Apple store and only got around to viewing a DVD last night. This was through a program that I intended to use to rip the DVD for converting to use on iPhone. However on start-up I was prompted with a window that said my drive was region 1 configured and did I want to change to another region.

Is this correct, do all Macs come with region 1 DVD drives? The onscreen information told me I could only change the region of the drive 4 times. Is this also correct?

    Hi

That's right - you can change it a total of five times.

I asked a similar question a while ago apparently you can bypass it with VLC and using that to play your DVD's.

Or you can flash your firmware - Although as far as I'm aware this will void your warranty, and you risk bricking the drive.

Here's the thread with more details.

Can't understand why Apple are selling equipment in the UK that is region 1 by default?

Ohwell, at least I got the option to change it (and can do 4 more times).
