My CD burner seems to be having some problems which is forcing me to look at a replacement. My mate is going to purchase a Pioneer 105 or 106 within the next few days and I very well get one at the same time. Does anyone know a region hack for it?

Also I have heard once it has played a region 5 times it is locked into that region if there was an hack do they work after those 5 times or has it to be implemented before

105 has modded firmware, 106 needs a workaround at the moment, look here ;)

If you are worried about firmware the region killer products from www.dvdidle.com work well, but you MUST set the drive to a region of your choice first, otherwise the software players just hang.

I would have thought the firmware hack on the 105 would work even if the drive had been changed 5 times and locked.

Not sure about the 106 and regionfree working after lock though.

Yep, it doesn't matter if the drive has been "locked". Flashing will permanently make it RPC1 - i.e region free.

Have an A05 (OEM 105) & flashed with updated firmware. Lots of other benefits aswell as region free.

Rip speed limitation defeated, compatible with more media, faster burn speed (eg. 4x rather than 2x with certain media). Think there was one/two more things mentioned too

Can't complain about the 105/A05 - excellent performer & (now) cheap as chips.

    :)
