Will a player give as a good a picture on a player with a built in converter as one where you have to hack on the remote? Is there a difference? My current player while nice, does not even have progressive scan let along HDMI. Looking at a region free player that has the above mentioned and priced from 200.00-500.00 U.S. dollars. I'm looking at Pioneer Elite, Yamaha, and Marantz. Any opinions? Thanks.

Regio free has nothing to do with the picture quality as far as I know (and I made all my players region free on day 1 and it is one of the major aspects to go for a specific brand/modell).

No matter if there is a remote hack, a firmware flash or a physical change all these do is circumvent the region code protection.

Apparently the safest method is the remote hack.
Hacked firmware from potentially doubtful sources or soldering has always a certain danger of destroying the player.

    I second what Spooney says.

Doesn't make a difference as is something seperate to the decoding itself.
