I have seen the R3 version of chicago on cd-wow for £6.99 with DTS in english and wondered if the discs from region 3 are the same as R1 or R2?
Or does the picture and sound quality drop?

My R3 Shaolin Soccer disc is top notch :) But that's the only one I have.

Most of my reg3 discs have had good pq and sound and has been comparable to other regions. It does vary from disc to disc though as it does with reg1,2 etc anyway. You pay your money take your chance but for the price I've not been disapointed yet.
It's always best to check with dvdcompare.net if your interested in finding the best version of a film possibe.

I have to say the standard has improved a lot in the last year. And due to piracy the legit DVD prices in Hong Kong are kept down, savings all round.

The only thing any of the films are not always anamorphic when the R1 & R2 releases are.

R3 is well worth investigating - I've got some excellent R3 titles ie Butch Cassidy, Final Destination 2, Taxi 2 etc that have all the sound and PQ qualities of the R1 / R2 but at a fraction of the price.

Some are short of extras, but I'd rather save a tenner and not have a trailer or other pointless tat that usually pads out discs.

R3 is a no-brainer in many cases for me.

One note of caution, I got my R3 Final Destination 2 from cd-wow the other day and it will only play properly in my Tosh 220e DVD player, my PC drives won't read it properly, nor will my old Panasonic 100. The quality of picture and sound (on the player it works on) can't be falted though.

I have bought The Others and Amelie on R3. I find them to be OK on TV, but slightly soft on my projector. Interestingly my DVD R home recording (from FilmFour) of Amelie is better than my R3 copy (but my R3 has DTS). I avoid buying R3 discs. I have never compared either of these discs to the R1 or R2 copy.

Also Received my R3 Chicago DVD, I've only had a quick play, but both picture and sound seem very good.
