Not sure about X-Men, R1 is very good so haven't bothered with R2.

    Fifth Element R1 for picture.

Sleepy Hollow you want French R2 DTS version [IMG]

Not sure about Scarface. I have R2.

    Adam,

Your decision is clearly swayed by the short and succinct Feature on the R2. This information is taken from the Rewind Comparison Database.

Whilst Rewind is very useful it should only be an indicator NOT a decision maker. It's like saying that PAL is better than NTSC if the disc content is the same. Not necessarily so as anyone buying Prince Of Egypt R2 or Hardboiled R2 will have sadly found out by now.

However it does NOT take into consideration Picture Quality which is far better on the R1.

    Really?
Damn, I was impressed by the picture quality of the R2 version. What other places can I look for comparisons in future?

    Thanks.

    Adam,

You're always best off reading true comparison reviews which buy both discs and rate them like I often do.

2nd best is to ask! Did you know for example that Faculty R4 is the best? or Matrix R4? or Jaws R1 DTS (Sound is head and shoulders better)...

Yeah, Jaws DTS is indeed an absolute cracker.

BTW, MJeeves Scarface was very recently reviewed on my site (today in fact [IMG]) and you'll also find reviews for X-Men (R1) and The Fifth Element (R2) by clicking below..... [IMG] Check them out.

I received my R1 Fifth Element yesterday. It destroys the R2 I also have. I was quite surprized. I will have to give more thought to these purchases.

R2 DTS Sleepy Hollow. That sounds interesting, weren't the UK supposed to get DTS SH as the first DTS disc back last July......

    Oh well.

    jenz,

How can there be so much difference?
R4 is hard to get. So should i always buy R1 over R2?
Can't believe that 5th Elemant a french movie is better in R1 than R2.

    What about this movies:
    -Starshiptroopers
    -terminator SE
    -Disney animated movies.
    -Heat
    -mask of zorro
    -Gladiator

R1 Starship Trooper - absolutely positively definitely.

    Terminator R2

    Disney R1

Heat - dunno, both have F-all extras.

    Zorro - R2

    Gladiator - don't matter - same.

Scarface - NOT the R1 it is an extremely bad non-anamorphic print.

Sleepy Hollow - French R2, same contents as the UK disc but also has a DTS track (Pathe released both the UK and French disc, UK didn't get DTS because Pathe couldn't delay the release date any further while they prepared the DTS track so they added it to the French disc that was released later)

Fifth Element - hard to decide on this, the R2 has the extras. But the encoding is slightly better on the R1 version due to some glitches in the encoding of the R2 version (very noticeable in one scene). Do not expect a SE as Besson won't allow it.

X-MEN - R1 is meant to be getting a directors special edition later this year (the first release was a rush job to get it out in time for chrismas 2000) The current R1 and R2 are more or less equal.

Starship Troopers - at the moment R1 and it will most proberly remain the best. The current R2 version is a featureless flipper. R2 is getting a dual layered reissue in July with some extras. But R1 is rumoured to be getting a new Special Edition soon.

Terminator SE - R2 or R4 (same discs). R1 not out until later this year (should be only one disc and may lose some of the extras)

Gladiator - more or less the same.

Mask of Zorro - R2 is the best, excellent picture and sound and decent set of extras (has more than the R1 version !)

    Disney Animated Films:
Tarzan Although the picture quality of the R1 version is superior (R2 ever so slightly washed out) R1 2 disc version is the best. as the R2 2 disc set loses extras.

Bugs Life: R1 2 disc set, beats the R2 version easily.

Dinosaur - R1 2 disc set as the R2 loses the DTS track

Fantasia Boxset: R1 easily. as the R2 lose the 4 commentaries and the DTS tracks and other extras from the 3rd disc.

Toy Story: R1 for the 3 disc Boxset (R2 lose the commentaries, musical score tracks

Lady and the Tramp: R1 (see why here: http://www.bulletsnbabesdvds.com/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=6 )

    More on Disney animated films:

If it's any of the following 10 movies then you will have to wait a bit: Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Bambi, The Jungle Book, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Lady and the Tramp and 101 Dalmatians. These are all going to be part of Disneys Platinum collection (Ultra Special Editions), the 10 films will be released over the next 10 years, one every October starting with Snow White on October 9th this year. (Disney have said they will be worldwide releases)

101 Dalmatians is out at the moment: 2 versions in R1 (4:3 and non-anamophic widescreen) with a trailer. The UK version is only 4:3 and appears to have no extras. So if you want 101 Dalmations it might be worth getting the 2 disc 100/102 Dalmations set if you can pick it up cheap.

    While we're on the topic:

    1) Which comparison websites do you use?

    2) Under what conditions is pull down (right term?) noticable when an NTSC DVD is viewed on PAL?

    Thanks,
    Joel

    My own ;)

R4 is not hard to get. Just goto www.ezydvd.com.au order and they arrive (normally cheaper than R2 also).

Personally if you are using a CRT Projector I believe MI2 R1 and Gladiator R1 are superior to their UK counterparts. I notice more dirt in the Mountain opening of MI2 on the R2, and also in the initial Battle Scenes of Gladiator. The woods aren't so sharp.

Other Disney's: Mulan Mainland R2 (not UK) is Anamorphic.
