just got this problem tonight whilst watching a film from an external HDD. the ps3 is a 40gb bought from Amazon Christmas 2007 so it's out of warranty.

i have read through countless threads but i'm not sure what my best option is.

1. Contact Sony
2. take it to get repaired privately?
3. try and do it myself? what can be done?

it is a 40gb model with a 320gb hdd inside full of music!

any ideas?

thanks in advance!

yellow!

called Sony. being swapped Wednesday for a refurb. £128.

need to swap the hdd back to the old 40gb one.

pain

gutted really because i wanted to get a popcorn hour soon. i may sell the new ps3 out of frustration!

i can't see the hairdryer treatment lasting tbh.

maybe not but long enough to trade in, then you get a slim and sony get payback.......

I think the hair dryer treatment it similar to what the heat guns do. As stated above, worth doing, even if it works just long enough to trade in.

I've been looking at the Popcorn Hour as well, not sure if to get one of those or the WD TV Live. Choices choices choices :)

so what are the 'trade in terms' then?

i'm too late now anyway as i have already paid and arranged delivery etc.

i think it's bizarre that a Sony product can just conk out like that and it costs £128 to replace. it should be cheaper than that. Plus the fact that they get my playstation in return to strip down and sell on!!

i should really have been offered a slim for cheaper.
