Probably not very close. That statement was from last year's Dimension Jump convention.

I think it's been too long in the works now. It would've been nice in the mid-nineties, after series 6 and with Rob Grant involved.

After having to pass on the chance for WETA involvement (which surely would've assured some key investment) I think Naylor should just let it be.

I can't see it happening now as it's been so long since the last TV series, it makes me wonder if Series 8 was the last we'll see of Red Dwarf :(

    Nooooooooooo.

Even if we end up with "Craig Charles in William Shatner's old corset and a Kryten with a zimmer frame" it'd be worth it. In fact, I can picture some of the episodes. That'd be cool.

Thats a bit like thinking you've got more chance of getting a loan off the bank manager because you know someone who'll sell you a Ferrari. Weta are a special effects company who get paid for work they do on a movie ...not the other way round.

Effects companies do not particularly influence initial film financing

Films have been sold, or had their budgets increased significantly, based on the quality of images in pre-production & pre-visualisation work. GNP could have used some of their money to finance some WETA visuals, to use as bait for potential financers.

From sound of Naylor, when he's spoken about the WETA incident, it seems they'd be more than willing to get involved.

Their involvement would influence film financing. "We've got the Lord of the Rings effects team behind". It'd hold some weight.

Sorry this is drivel. Weta and every other visual effects house out there are not charities. The only time they even consider getting involved in a project without a finalised contract on the table is when there is no other work around or if they are doing good will tests specifically in order to win paying work. They won't so much as consider hiring a single artist to work on a test unless its a green lit production with a concrete possibility of a contract .

Incidentally Red Dwarf has been touted around at various times and numerous effects houses produced small tests for it about 4 years ago but I don't think Weta even went as far as producing anything. Like I said it was a quiet period.

Also Weta like most houses primarily employs freelance artists. Most of the visual effects in films today are done by a comparatively small pool of people who work on a freelance basis. The same people that do LOTR also do Star Wars , Spiderman , I Robot you name it.

Its less important where you get it done as long as you have sufficient funds for the job. When the industry is busy you run out of decent artists long before you run out of floorspace.
