Apologies for the vague initial info, I'll update when I get more.

A friend of mine managed to submerge his phone in water for a few minutes and it seems to be knackered. He's not fussed about the phone itself as it's an old one, but there are a lot of pictures etc on it that he's keen to recover.

It's a Motorola, not sure of the model. Data is on the internal memory not external card.

Any suggestions?

Was he not using Google Photos on it, if he had google play on there he more than likely has an account it backs up everything on it's cloud but only if using google photos, all you have to do is log in and they are there, but if he wasn't it may be expensive data recovery.

Does the phone switch on or is it totally banjaxed?

Local phone shop (Samsung authorised repairer, will do anything though) will charge £30 for data recovery, so it's not that expensive, I would recommend using the Google photo app in future to anyone, and Google back up it backs up everything, apps, phone numbers etc.
