Recording Issue

I have moved my 'old' DVDR/VCR into the bedroom to use in there. After setting it up I checked it was working OK. When recording onto video tapes no problem. Recording onto DVD and the lower part of the picture is not recorded. I do not mean the picture is squashed or 'letterboxed' it is not there and a black area is on the lower area of the screen/picture. When test recording I recorded a man talking straight to camera he was wearing a waistcoat with a pocket watch chain hanging and two buttons of his waistcoat were visible below the chain. Play back the recording and you can just see the top of the chain and the two buttons are not showing. Am I just being thick or is there some other reason. Incase it matters I have it connected to a freeview TV via aerial into DVDR out to TV and scart between AV in/out (DVDR) and AV2 (Out) on TV. I think I have tried all other permutations but I am open to suggestions. It never did this on my TV downstairs.

Cheers

Do commercial DVDs play fine? Or does one of the discs you have recorded play back fine on another DVD player? Are you sure it is the recording that's not working, and not that the DVD is not playing discs back properly?

Check the DVDR settings for any PAL/NTSC options.
PAL is 625 lines (576 used) and NTSC is 525 lines (480 used).
Is the missing portion about 80 lines (1/6th of the picture ?)
Just one suggestion, but someone else may have the correct answer.
