I have just had FreeSat installed and after years of bad aerial reception and am overwhelmed by the clear reception. Now, of course, I want to go that bit further and record things to view later. I have an oldish video recorder connecting to new TV and digibox:

    VHS - Sanyo VHR-798E
    TV - Hitachi 22LD4200UK
    Sky - Thomson DSI 4212

I can record BBC1 and 2, ITV1 and Channel 4 but anything else doesn't work.

My Sanyo manual doesn't list the Thomson box in it's list of satellite boxes. Can anyone help in telling me how to configure my recorder or where to look - or do I have to buy a new recorder?

    Thanks
    Liz

    LizMidge - welcome!

If the video has a SCART socket run a SCART lead from the VCR socket on the digibox to the socket on the VCR. You then need to select the appropriate 'channel' to record from the digibox. It'll be AUX/AV/'L' (or 'line') or similar.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for responding so quickly Arthur. I have a scart from the video to the digibox and I have the video set to L2. I am assuming that this is fine as I can record BBC1 etc. It is only the "extra" channels that I can't record. I think this is because in the Sanyo recorder setup I can't tell it that it's talking to a Thomson digibox. Any and all help gratefully received.....
    Thanks

    Liz,

Your VCR obviously has 2 SCART sockets - hence the 'L2' bit. If you're trying to record from 'L2' then make sure the SCART lead is connected to the corresponding SCART socket on the VCR.

The VCR & digibox don't 'talk' to each other at all. Good job they don't have to - Mr Sanyo's Japanese and Mr Thomson's French! :D

    Thanks Arthur,
I'll check when I get home. Surely these bits of kit know Esperanto.......
    From memory my setup is:
Thomson Digibox via Scart to Sanyo VCR
Thomson Digibox via Scart to Hitachi TV
Thomson Digibox via Aerial cable to MiniDish
Thomson Digibox via Aerial cable to Sanyo VCR

Definitely no aerial cable from the old aerial to the TV.
If the scart was in the wrong socket how would I be able to record BBC1 etc?
Thanks again for all your help
    regards
    Liz
