I need to record DVDs so that I can take them with me to watch while I'm away from home. Do I need one of these: http://www.margothedog.com/html/orbit.html or will a laptop do the job just as well?

Also, has anybody got any ideas on which DVD recorders to consider? The panny 55 and pioneer 420 look popular although I notice there are a few budget machines hitting the market now

do you want to play ps2 on it?? to me that seems the only realy benefit of having one of these above using an existing laptop ( so long as you have a dvd player and a decent gfx card).
if you have neither then i would suggest getting one of the cheaper dvd portable players for about £100.

    as for dvd recorder?

you have a pc? so why not get a pc dvdrw? £50 will get you a top of the range one.

I don't want to play PS2 but my boy wants something to use with PS2 in the car. I guess I could just get a screen for that.

I have a laptop. I guess I could just try that and see how it goes...
