Can anyone recommmend a decent DVD recorder (I dont care too much what format it records in) that will play XVID, DIVX and MPEG 4?

Of course I would prefer cheaper rather than fancy major brand, but will consider paying more if there is some good reason. rRegion-free would be good too, either out of the box region-free or via a relatively easy hack.

XviD and DivX are both MPEG4 codecs.

DivX is the licenced version with DRM checking, XviD is the Open source version.

My DVD Player lists DivX and MPEG4 playback but has no trouble playing back XviD.

Hope that will make your search easier.

Hello mate i have the LG RH177 which is a DVD recorder and has an 80gig HDD. It says on the box it plays DVD and DivX and at the moment everything i have put into it, its played. I have had no problems with it at all. I brought it at Xmas and it was 150 quid so i guess its a little cheaper now. I would recommend this but i am not an expert but if u want it for DivX it players everything.

    Hope this helps cheers :hiya:

As far as I know there are many different specifications for MPEG4.

I believe DivX and XviD are spec part 4 and MPEG4 h.264 is spec part 10.

MPEG4 h.264 is mainly used for HDTV, I know the two DivX / XviD players I've tried will not play back XviD with a high resolution (720) but plays back standard / lower resolutions without problem.

    Hope that helps.
