The budget is £800 but will increase only if really necessary.
Im after a pair of floorstanders JUST for music. They are to fit in with an Arcam A85 and P85 and a Meridian 507 cd player.
I would just like some advise on what you guys think would be good to atleast give a fair audition as i seem to be getting no where with the help from my local HI-FI store.
All i ask is that the speakers that are sugested are bi-ampable (which i think most are anyway).
Any help would be greatly appriciated as im just about at my witts end with these damn bloody speakers:zonked:

What sort of sound are you after? Warm, bright, articulate, neutral? Do you want good soundstaging and imaging or do you prefer depth?

Failing that, what sort of music do you listen to?

A balanced sound that has warmth. I found the evo 3's to be excellent (i currentley own) with very good balance but found the B&W 603 to be to much geared towards base and drowns out the treble.
I listern to classical, pop, dance, rap and others. I guess just a good alround speaker would be fine. Sort of like what the evo's offer but better:)

Try B&W602 less money but better trble IMHO great with Chillis and JK or the other end is Pro-ac but they arent floor stander either Hope this helps a bit. B&W are quite classically aimed so maybe the new M5 range from mission is worth a listen

Something from the Monitor Audio silver range?

HifiBitz have the 8i for £500 or the 9i for £730 IIRC. Then there are the new models the S6 and S8.

The Spendor S range (S6, S8 for floorstanders) is supposed to be very well regarded.

That said, does it have to be a floorstander? Have a listen to the ATC SCM-12s (£999) and I doubt you'll ever want floorstanders again! And if you really *need* that chest-pounding bass, then you're going to want a subwoofer anyway (even if you do get floorstanders), so you may as well go for a quality standmount IMO, and get a sub when you can afford to.

    Cheers,

    Dunc

Linn Ninkas are very nice, awesome imaging, and you might be able to get them for near £800 depending on your dealer (RRP is I think around £900). They allow for passive bi-amping or active biamping using an external crossover.

I was very impressed with the Quad 22L floorstanders when I heard them at the Manchester show last summer

    So far ive shortlisted these

    Standmounts:

    B&W CDM1NT

    Floorstanders at similar range:

    Mission 782SE
    Wharfeldale Evo 30
    B&W DM604

Wish list (if the other half lets me):

    B&W CDM7NT
    B&w CDM9NT

I think the B&W's are going to compliment my meridian 507 cd player better but there prices are quite staggering especially the 9NT which would be probably the prime choice if i could raise the funds, but i know im going to end up buying a sub if i get a set of the better B&W speakers.
The missions, Evo 30's and DM604 are a way of me skimping out of getting a sub i think atleast for a while, but wont offer the clarity in sound i want for classical but i think will suit all the other music i like and probably more to the other halfs tastes.
Still ive got to get the short list down to about 3 sets of speakers before i can get an audition arranged.

I have celestion A1's....... there are a number of guys on here with them....... they were £900. Although they are now discontinued now, I still havent heard anything better for that money, ridiculously good imaging which few ever recognised because they didnt use good enough amps! A bargain these days at only £300

If you are considering B&W CDM 9NTs then you should also be considering Nautilus 805s.

I would like to but they are to far outta my price range and i dont think my arcam a85 and p85 would do them justice. I made a big mistake due to lack of knowledge instead of buying an a85 and p85 i should have got a musical fidelity amp. Never mind you live and learn:)

That's still a darm good integrated/power setup you've got there though! I wish I skimp and saved and went for the A85 instead of my A65.

Dynaudio Contour 1.1 £879 list (+ stands) or
Dynaudio Audience 62 £729 (if you must have floor standers)

Personally, I am in the "sattelite+sub" camp, as you can see ;-)

And, can of course be had cheaper from Germany !!
