Recommended speakers for 400-500 GBP?

Floorstanding or standmounts?

What amp?

How large is the room?

You'll need to add the following info to get a meaningful reply. :smashin:

20 Square meters, so about 215 square feet.

Floorstanding and standmounts are either OK.

I'll choose the amp that'll fit the chosen one. So thats not a problem right know.

Well you get a better quality standmount for 500, but then you'll likely want a sub if you listen to hip hop, electronic etc

Sub 500 floorstander - Monitor Audio Bronze 5 is generally a good recommendation. Easy to drive, good build quality and an English Brand.

Sub 500 standmount - Monitor Audio Silver 50 is 499 at Richer Sounds.

Just to check - this is per speaker not per pair?
I have seen both kinds of pricing in the past.
Good frequency response and sensitivity plus able to handle about 120W RMS.

I am looking for per pair price (500GBP)

Anybody has any experience with Q Acoustics 3050 / Elac Debut F5 / Acoustic Energy 305? I could get these rather cheap. Or Monitor Audio Silver 1 is really cheap here too. Like 300 GBP

The elacs are great speakers so are the MA 1's but with them your going to probably want a sub to handle the lower frequencies.

The issue is that most speakers have their own signature sound and what i love you might hate. The argument is not so much which one is better if that makes sense?

You really need to pop down to a dealer and have a listen of a selection of speakers and try and find out what sound your after.

Look at the frequency range e.g. the Bronze 5 is 37Hz to 30kHz which is when the response by a certain amount (I think it is 3dB).
Go for well above 20kHz for the upper limit since the responsiveness will reduce well before the upper limit.

No exp, but the 3050 and Elac F5 are highly rated for their price bracket.

I agree they are both great speakers for the price.

Then maybe i'll choose the Elac F5, the price is very reasonable right now.

I would still advise to go and have a listen before you splash that kind of cash on a speaker

Absolutely, of course, that'll be my first thing, i totally agree. I'll listen to each and choose after that.

Topping the list at £500/pr in a Bookshelf, you will do hard trying to beat this -

Monitor Audio Silver 2 - (replaced by the Silver 100) - £499/pr -

Monitor Audio Silver 2 Rosenut Bookshelf Speakers (Pair) - Monitor Audio - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

Monitor Audio Silver 2 Black Oak Bookshelf Speakers (Pair) - Monitor Audio - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

8" or 200mm Bass drivers with response down to 40hz, which is about the best you can hope for in a Bookshelf speaker.

In floorstanding, with 2x5" (130mm) the Monitor Audio Bronze 5 (£495/pr) hits a pretty high standard in its price range -

Monitor Audio Bronze 5 Walnut Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - Monitor Audio - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

But, if you can find more money, the Monitor Audio Bronze 6 (£630/pr) has 3x6.5" (165mm) bass driver -

Monitor Audio Bronze 6 Walnut Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - Monitor Audio - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

Other Floorstanding in roughly this price range -

Monitor Audio has a new Monitor Series out, but so far we have ZERO feedback on them -

Monitor Audio Monitor 200 Walnut Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - Monitor Audio - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

Monitor Audio Monitor 200 Walnut Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - Monitor Audio - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

And just a general range of speakers -

Wharfedale Diamond 230 Black Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - Wharfedale - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

Wharfedale Diamond 11.3 Walnut Pearl Floorstanding Speaker (Pair) - Wharfedale - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

DALI SPEKTOR 6 Black Ash Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - DALI - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

Tannoy Mercury 7.4 Light Oak Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - Tannoy - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

Mission LX-4 Black Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - Mission - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

DALI Zensor 5 White Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - DALI - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

Q Acoustics 3050 Graphite Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - Q Acoustics - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

All good speakers. The DALI Zensor 5 are very similar to the Monitor Audio Bronze 5, both very well liked in a compact floorstanding speaker.

If you like the sound, the Tannoy Mercury 7.4 are very well liked. This is about the 3rd or 4th generation of Mercury speakers.

The Mission LX Series have been getting very good reviews, most rating them above the price class, so that is certainly worth checking out.

DALI Spektor are also new with little feedback, but Dali does a very good job with their speakers, and I would expect good results.

The Q Acoustic 3050 don't go all that deep, but the bass is very good, and a very mellow controlled but detailed speaker.

That should give you a good cross-section of the possibilities.

On the button as ever Steve. :smashin:

Also the Wharfedale 230 (2x6.5") linked are very good speakers at a nice discount.

The Wharfedale 11.3 are 2x5", and should be very good for the price.

These are both from Wharfedale's very popular DIAMOND series.

Thank you for your opinion ! The thing is, actually, i live outside the UK, and some of these are exceeds my budget.

But I will try to find some UK retailer who may ships internationally.

Meanwhile, what is your opinion about the speakers mentioned above?

- Elac Debut F5 470 GBP
- Focal Aria 906 450 GBP
- Acoustic Energy 305 470 GBP

Or maybe:

- B&W 685 S2 450 GBP
- Dynaudio Emit M10 450 GBP
- KEF Q350 536 GBP
- Monitor Audio Silver 1 337 GBP
Do you have any experiences on these?

Because the Monitor Audio Silver 2 is 740 GBP in my country, the Bronze 5 is 680 GBP.

You need to decide what type of speaker you want first. Out of all of those the Focal 906 is probably the biggest discount there. Usually retails for 699.

Best bang for buck will be the Elac Debut F5. The reviewers love this speaker, and many claim it competes with speakers twice the price.

So, bookshelf or floorstander...?

Remember with bookshelf speakers they need to go on stands. A good set of speakers stands will be 50-100. I use Atacama Nexus 10i (cost 120) which are 1000mm tall for my surround speakers. With stereo listening you'd probably want around 600mm tall. These retail around 80 I think.

Also with bookshelves you might want a sub at some point as they don't go as low as floorstanders. A cheap but decent sub will be 400ish.

And what finish they are available in.
Personally I prefer a wood (style) finish, the black or white finishes are too harsh for my liking.

Lots of good options in this thread but one possibility hasn't been mentioned as yet - a setup based on a pair of active studio monitors. It could be a relevant approach for you because you don't appear to have purchased an amp.

In the same way that passive speaker-based systems don't suit everyone, active based-systems don't either. The active approach is definitely worth investigating though if you're after best (audio) bang per buck. There's plenty of info discussing the merits of both types of system on these forums (and the Internet in general). There's even a dedicated thread:

The Active Speakers spot

It's a point, you can use the line outputs on an AV receiver so you still get all the decoding, room calibration etc.
