I see that on Audiogon the old Arcam distributer is selling off their remaining stock of phono stage cards for a number of Arcam products including the AV8 / AV9. Price is rather good at $115 US but I wonder how good these cards sound in comparison to a dedicated phono stage from the likes of Pro-ject, Rega or Clearaudio.

Does anyone have any experience with Arcam's phono stage in comaprison to stand alone units? My price range is up to $350 US.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Audiogon has never been an Arcam distributor. It was Audiophile Systems out of Indianapolis, Indianna.

That's correct gbaby - I meant that Webhammer, who works at Audiophile Systems is blowing out their remaining stock through Audiogon.

Check the Audiogon website. Search on "Arcam."

I think it depends how good you source is (and if you expect to upgrade it later). I used to have an Arcam A85 with the Arcam phono stage for my Rega 3 and it was very good, but since upgrading to the AV8 I've had an "off-board" stage (ProJect Phonobox 2 - just as good as the Arcam) initially with the Rega 3 and now with the Gyro. Dealers will tell you that it's good to keep any amplification away from the processor which supports keeping the phono stage off-board, and you can also upgrade more easily. Having upgraded to the Gyro last year I am now about to take the plunge on a more expensive phono stage. Good luck :smashin:
