I’m after some more Gangster style films and need some suggestions. Something nice and gritty with a not so happy ending like you get in ‘Get Carter’ or ‘The Long Good Friday’ . I love the British style but will give US films a try quite happily.

    Cheers, Mylo

Do you mean taken from the gangsters point of view rather than the police eg Gangster No1 rather then The Untouchables or will both of them do?

Do you mind B&W film Angels With Dirty Faces, White Heat with James Caney are in that vain, Also no doubt you have thought of The Godfather trilogy and Scarface.

got Snatch, Scarface, Untouchables, G.No1. The others sound good

Don't mind which viewpoint Garrett, I'm a big fan of the Sweeney films as well. Snatch is superb but is not really deep enough. B&w is no problem as Brighton Rock is a film I really enjoyed.

The car ride for Bob Hoskins is just such a powerful ending to an excellent film, its that sort of darkness I'm after.

Here some to be getting on with Mylo

A Bronx Tale which is taken from the point of view of a lad who gets advice from a gangster and starts to look up to him.
    Casino
Across 110th Street (theme music was used again for Jackie Brown)
    Bonnie and Clyde gangsters?????????
    Carlito's Way
Dillinger the 1973 version with Warren Oats
    The Friends of Eddie Coyle
    The French Connection 1&2
    The Gangs of New York
    Goodfellas
    Kiss of Death
    The Krays UK
    The Limey UK roots
Once Upon A Time In America
    The Outfit with Robert Duvall
Point Blank with Lee Marvin also with him
    Prime Cut
    The St. Valentine's Day Massacre
    This Gun for Hire
    Villain UK

Also Prince of the City may be worth having a look at although nothing to do with gangsters is about police corruption and someone turning states evidence.

A long time ago, I still get bits of the music by Ennio Morricone poping in my mind trying to recall it.

I like a lot of Ed Harries films.

Payback was a re-make of Point Blank which I think is far more gritty.

The problem is good gangster films are few and far between whereas there's always some gangster film being made .

    Reservoir Dogs
    Pulp Fiction
The limey - I'm surprised you didn't enjoy it!
The 51st state - not exactly gritty but there you go.
city on fire - the Hong Kong movie made by Ringo Lam that inspired Reservoir Dogs.
    Payback
    A Bronx Tale
