Got £13k to spend

Ideally would like a 5 door hatch, reasonable performance, air con and sat nav

Any suggestions as I have not a clue about cars. Is it reasonable to expect all that for £13k

Cheers

You should be able to haggle a deal for a golf MK5 for about that sort of price...just missing the satnav (tom toms are now about 200ish so not a major worry!)

You wont get a better car for the money. I am on my second GOLF mk5 (16fsi) and its been 100% reliable since day one

It depends what sort of performance you're after. Do you want diesel or petrol? Do you want something with a bit of poke, or are you happy to have an 'adequate' engine?

And how big does it need to be?

I would go the Tomtom route as well: it's about a tenth of the price of some fitted satnav systems, and you can take it with you when you change cars.

If you're looking for something new, I'd consider the new Honda Civic, Ford Focus or maybe an Astra. The Golf is OK, but you'll find better value elsewhere, particularly if you're looking at the basic golf models.

If you go for a slightly smaller car, you can get quite an exciting Fiesta, Fabia or similar...

find another grand and it's yours.
cheaper lesser specced models in stock.
I've been looking at these for a while they seem to have a decent turnover
of these diesel versions come up pretty often.

These are generally twenty grand plus motors with less than 10k on the clock

That's actually too much money for a used Signum! Similar mileage and age, with a diesel engine, can be found for under £13k around here.

Mine doesn't have satnav, but it's diesel, part leather, and was under £12k...

I was about to reconmend a signum motorpoint have a 2.2 direct petrol manual for £12,500 WSIlver with 4k on the clock, Air con sat nav cruise etc 17" alloys.
I really facny a 1.9 CDTi Signum in black with leather.....mmmmmm seeeing more on the roads so thats means more to buy in a few months

rhoamish ,
Where is round round here?

Main dealers up in scotland generally want about two grand over the motorpoint pricing.
I wouldn't want to spend that kind of cash with a private sale or worse still the small (arfur) independents.

OI HORNY your coveting my next car!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats main dealers everywhere even the ones 1/2 a mile from a motor point site!

Just read an interesting review on motorpoint at dooyoo http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/internet-sites/motorpoint-co-uk/439334/
Worth considering (also check for cam belt changes vauxhall are 40k now and when a mate bought an astra it was at 60k and the belt hadnt been done so he got the dealer (black Horse) to agree to change it before collection)

Cheers everyone. That site is quite useful. Am leaning towards a Golf of some sort

I'd look at a mondeo 2.5 V6 if your not too concerned about fuel economy.

My local ford specialist often gets models with sat nav, he buys the cars as ex ford company cars in an auction every week so they're often higher specced.

His only touch screen sat nav model at the moment is a 'Mondeo 1.8 Sci Ghia X 130ps 5dr'. 54 plate, 11k miles, £13k and equipment is as follows

Touch Screen GPS Satellite Navigation,
Power Sunroof,
Multi Media DVD Player,
6 CD,
ABS,
6 Airbags,
Climate Control,
Cruise Control,
Secrecy Glass,
Reverse Parking Sensors,
Cruise Control,
Xenon Headlamps,
Folding Mirrors,
Alloy Wheels

Nice thing about Golfs is that, if looked after, they hold their value better than most.

And the Golf diesels are particularly frugal with 50mpg plus easily obtainable. Although if your mileage is only 10K the extra cost of the purchase may negate any savings in fuel consumption.

I've just got a Golf Plus SE on a 3yr contract hire and am well pleased with it. As standard it comes with alloys, air-con, cruise control, rain sensitive wipers, auto on headlights.

Build quality is excellent and it drives well.

'Round here' is Bedfordshire: most of them are ex-Vauxhall Motors fleet cars (the Signum is too expensive new, so they didn't sell many, but they're a bargain second-hand).

Mine was from an independent, which used to be a main dealer. However, I wouldn't recommend a Vauxhall main dealer: every contact with them has been bitterly disappointing. My car spent 3 days with two different dealers, and they still couldn't sort out a minor fault. However, a competent independent mechanic fixed it in 10 minutes, at a cost of £15!

I'd recommend the dealer I bought it from: they always have Signums in stock, in various trim levels. I've had mine a while, so it has the 2.2 DTi engine, but I should think the new 1.9 CDTi is a better engine (not that the 2.2 is particularly bad: it's just not quite as responsive).

Petrol models are seriously cheap: the 2.0 turbo can be had for under £10k, with around 10,000 miles on the clock, at a year old!

There was also a 150 bhp Vectra SRi 1.9 CDTi, with full leather and satnav, under 12 months old, around 10k miles, for £12,900. A Golf will probably hold its value better from new, but they're really pricey new for decent spec.

Spent 20 years in the trade and if reliability is near the top of you list it has to be Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. The Civic in particular will also hold its price.

Get a Land Rover Defender, and win all the girls.
