Ive decided to get a dedicated setup for music playback.

So Im after a set of speakers, and an amp, for sub £200.

The source at the moment will be from my server through phono, as I have all my CD's ripped to it.

Mission make some nice cheap speakers for around the £80 mark I forget the model number or you could keep an eye out for something in classifieds (better option IMO). £120 should buy you a decent 2nd hand amp, say a Rotel.

That's assuming you are talking stereo, £200 is somewhat limiting if you are after surround.

However you could buy a surround amp and a pair of speakers now and grab more speakers later on. In that case, a quick look in the classifieds reveals a decent surround receiver in your price range:

At the moment I watch all my movies through my PC as I have a 20" widescreen TFT, and surround is handled by a Creative Digital 5700 system. Which is fine.

But I dont like it for music.

So I thought a good stereo setup would work better.

You're going to have quite a job!

Have a look at the second hand market - some B&W 601S2 and a Rotel 931 are a combo that I recently saw go for about £180 on fleabay

Ive been looking out for some good amps on eBay.

At the moment I like the look of:

Rotel RC 970 BX pre amp + RB 970BX Power Amplifier

    Marantz pm7200

    Marantz PM66-SE KI-Signature

Id like something to last me the next 3 years or so.

Ive decided to go for Rotel pre and power amps, as I believe this will be very flexible. I will use one power amp for the time being.

So aRotel RC 970 BX pre amp and RB 970BX Power Amplifier. Ive noticed some on eBay as well as second hand from some HiFi shops.

Now I just need some speakers.

    Thats very true.

But where can I get second hand stuff where I can actually listen to it?

Saying that though, I guess I could find some local hifi shops, and see what they have second hand. Then I could listen :)

I do love the idea of a pre amp and power amp though. Ive never listened to this sort of setup, only integrated amps.

There was a thread recently at pinkfishmedia.net about a decent second-hand system for £150. Beware, though, the guys there are of the flat-earth variety and don't go for fancy modern conveniences like remote controls. They'll recommend some top stuff but it'll be a few years old.
