currently have a LG C9 OLED TV, a Denon AVR-X2300W Receiver and a Kef egg 5.1 setup.

I would like to add Dolby Atmos (upward firing) to my listening experience (speakers should be fairly small) and am looking for advice on what options I have for a 5.1.2 speaker set, looking to spend at the most around £1500.

No information about room, size etc.

If you can´t jump to bookshelf size speakers then i would think twice cause you could be just making sideway move. The example below is not large and you would use speaker stands for the main speakers hopefully. The FX speakers are low depth wall mountable surround speakers. There is other options if you can´t wall mount or want something smaller for surround sides ("rears"). I use white finish as example, there is more finishes but the atmos upfiring speakers are only available as white and black so this limits you.

Total 1032£

If you have small to medium sized room, don´t look to annoy neighbours / shook the room and you are looking compact sized subwoofer then consider the soon to be discontinued SVS SB1000 for low price! There is no need to buy matching subwoofer, this will offer lot better bang for buck than any package woofer. SVS is one of the most known subwoofer manufacturer. Great support/service, long warranty. This has roughly size of 34x33x33cm

Total 1451£ as a 5.1.2 package (without discounts)

If you are looking something to give you more impact for blockbuster flicks and are ok with larger box then i would consider the new PB1000 Pro model. It will cost 599£, but if you ask around you should get the speakers i linked cheaper together so the total price would be close to that 1500£!

  • Dimensions (w/ grille): 18.9” (479mm) H X 15” (380mm) W X 20” (509mm) D
  • Dimensions (without grille): 18.9” (479mm) H X 15” (380mm) W X 19.2” (488mm)

Keep in mind that you need to meet these recommendations by Dolby below to get the best effects from the upfiring bounce type speakers! You would also sit 3meter away MAX from them roughly.

For optimal performance, the ceiling should be flat (not angled or vaulted), with a height between 7.5 and 14 feet (2.3 to 4.3 meters), and made of an acoustically reflective material (drywall, plaster, hardwood, or another rigid, non---sound-absorbing material).

Initially you could upgrade the front three and use the Eggs as surrounds in the short term until budget allows for better surrounds. That way you can put most of that budget into the front three and a pair of upfiring modules. I used my old Eggs in that position for a year before I finally upgraded them. You could conceivably use the the front left and right Eggs high on the wall if you could angle them towards the MLP. Configuration on the Denon would be Front Height.

There are lot more upfiring modules that now perform a dual role of having keyhole fittings so that they can also be mounted high on a wall and fire downwards. Avoid the entry level Onkyo speakers they are poor. KEF were probably the first manufacturer to embrace the upfiring concept with the R50s and these can often be found on flea bay. The current R8a are stupid money.

Thanks for the responses guys, I will read and digest.
My room is about 2.5m by 5m with the main listening position being just over 2m and ceiling is suitable.
I'd also contemplated the Focal Sib Evo Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 package but will take a look at the ideas provided. Ideally the front speakers would sit on a shelf that is 200mm deep, apologies for not stating this before as I think this rules out a lot of options.

I would be more worried about how wide the shelf/unit is and also how high it is. Ideally you would place the main speakers about 2meter apart and have the speakers so the tweeters would be close to seated ear height. That usually means roughly 60cm tall speaker stands/cabinet give or take. It would be quite pointless to spend big money and then make mistake/compromise with the speaker placement if the unit is too low and narrow that is.

The Evo package is compact/small, but also comes with rather poor subwoofer. The speakers should be good, how much better from Eggs then.. You didn´t mention which Eggs you have HTS2001/HTS3001/E301?

The Bronze size is no issue for your room. The earlier generation were one of the best speakers in their class for both movies and music! The new gen won´t be backward step. The design is completely new though so new cabinets, drivers and example new waveguide for tweeter for wider dispersion similar to Silver range.

Shelf is close to seated ear height and is pretty much 2 meters wide.
Kefs are HTS 1001.2's! so quite old now.
The Monitor Audio Bronze 50's which I think are the smaller speakers are too deep at 268mm: Monitor Audio Bronze 50 White Bookshelf Speakers (Pair) - Bookshelf Speakers - AV Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists
Was wondering about the Evo Package and see if a retailer (for example Richer Sounds) would swap the Subwoofer for a SVS SB-1000 or SVS PB-PRO1000 Ported as kindly suggested.

reuse the amp elsewhere or sell it and buy one of the newer soundbars from samsung, lg, yamaha sonos etc. i personally have a 5.1.4 setup, but with your room limits ,a soundbar could be a better prospect?

Ah forgot that. I don´t think they will take it off the package reducing price, but you can always sell it forward. The Focal package is quite cheap and leaves you plenty of money for the subwoofer.

In that case i would consider the new Pro models, the cheaper one i linked was the old model. You do have fairly small room and you need also consider the subwoofer placement.

Do you have your tv on the 5meter wall and you sit about 2meters from speakers? Couch is about midway at the opposite 5meter wall?

Yes those SVS subs look good actually. TV is on the 5 m wall. Couch is 0.5m away from the opposite 2.5m wall so about 2 m away.

Another option could be the Kef T105's.
Too many options!

They should be wall mounted / placed against walls. Ultra thin design and ideally you would buy the T301 and T301c for the front three as they are reportedly big jump from the T101! You could use the Eggs at the back for surround sides if it comes down to budget.. These are not cheap and the ultra slim size factor means they can only do so much, but many feels they are step up from Eggs still.

Yes, these would be placed against a wall and yes hear you regarding the 301's. I've read good things about the Focal Evo's though but not so much about the Kefs.

For a small room i would consider Arendal 1961 Monitors + Centre. They are sealed by design so can go against wall, plus they have 15cm depth which would be ideal for you too. These are getting quite popular by AVF members. Arendal is well known from the 1723 THX Ultra ranges. This LCR would be within your budget (1200£ roughly), but that would mean you would built the system up slowly perhaps using the Eggs as front heights for Atmos and surround sides. Subwoofer budget would be less also. BK Electronics has subwoofer at 400£ (P12-300SB) which would be ideal for small room, although you can get the older SB1000 for 419£ so you would be little over that 1500£ budget total. Check them out, we have owners thread somewhere and in one thread there is two new owners talking about these. Black and white finish.

Video review which gives you idea how they look also!
