Looking for suggestions on a new Digital Camera.

I've got about £300 to cover camera / memory / batteries.

    Whats the latest and greatest?

    Many Thanks

I would reccomend you have a look at Canon's A70, which will set you back about £240. 3Megapixels, runs on AA batteries & has simple point-and-shoot or manual modes for the more creative in you.

You get a 16mb card in the box, but your budget will allow you to increase that plus add a battery charger if you wanted.

Have a look on the amazon website, free delivery & plenty of customer opinions there.....

Thanks Kalef and monkeyboy73 for your reply :)

Those are among the ones I've been considering.

The Olympus is really small and well built.
The Canon is a bit bigger and needs 4x AA batteries to run it:eek:

Any comments on actual picture quality because thats what its all about.

    Regards

I don't have an A70 so can't comment on image quality, but I do have June's copy of Digital Camera magazine which rated it's picture quality very highly.

Also check out http://www.dpreview.com/ which will give you the chance to look at it and the Olympus. Very good/helpful forum there too, which should provide you with plenty of amunition.

    A couple of 4mp alternatives:

    1. Olympus C4000 - about £286 the last time I looked - 4mp, 3 x optical zoom - not small but an excellent camera.

    2. Minolta S414 - £250 ish - 4mp, 4 x optical zoom.

If it were my money I'd go for the Olympus. If I wanted something small, I'd spend just a little bit extra and go for a Canon S45 at £330.

    Matt.

Or even a Sony P92 for about £280

    5 Mega Pixels!!
3x optical zoom, Good quality photos. But sadly Abit tacky plasticky finish. But NOT lightweight.

Fuji FinePix F410 is £269 at Dixons, PC World, Currys etc. - comes without the cradle but with USB Cable. Includes a rechargeable LiIon battery and charger and 16MB xD Card
Should be able to get a 64MB XD Card and a Spare Rechargable battery for around £34 inc P&P total from www.7dayshop.com

The 410 is a nice looking camera. However, I have recently tried one out and found it was not good in dim light and that it enhanced colours a lot. Reds became noisy and greens too strong. Also it had a tendancy to cast a greenish look on certain shots. I found similar opinions in reviews. I was compariing it to the Minolta Dimage Xi and also the new xt, both of which gave a better performance in the dark and more accurate colour reproduction. If you want a "small" camera which the latter two are, then I would recommend them. It does depend on what you want of course, some people may say they are too small. What helps this is the lens is in the form of a prism and does not protrude out of the front. (fast start-up time) The Xt has several extra features over the Xi (including a charging station) and is the replacement. (No I do not work for MInolta). The above said, had I had nothing to compare against I may well have settled for the 410 which was nice to use but everytime you take a photo the blue lights on the front flash. This was a little annoying to subjects as they are pretty bright.

    Many thanks guys.

I finished up with the following:

Canon A70 from a local Jessops for £236 on a price match
256 mb (X26) memory card from Dabs for £39
Uniross 2 Hr car and home charger and 4x AA 2000 mAh NiMH batteries for £25 from Maplins.

    Total £300 :)

All I need now is a tidy case?

    Again Many Thanks :)

    snap see other thread

Jessops told me they were selling all their stock of A70s as soon as they come in. Not many on price match either

you could have saved £9 by price matching with amazon's offer

if you find a nice case let me know

I was shocked how many low res pics you can save on the 16mb 150 odd but i will be buying a 256 memory card
