I only have a Pioneer 575 but was pretty impressed with my first SACD purchase last week, NIN The Downward Spiral, and would like to purchase a few more titles.

I am going to get a couple of Simple Minds titles as I have been a big fan of theres for years and years (sad I know) but am also tempted by Keane's Hopes and Feares as well as Depeche Modes 101.

I have the above already on CD but wondered if anyone had the SACD's and considered them a worthy purchase ? I would love to hear what SACD's everyone else recomends too.

Did you have any issues with the bass when playing this disc through the 575? I get no bass whatsoever, no matter how high I turn my sub up.

No problems at all...it did take me ages to find all the relevent settings in the 575's menu to enable the SACD 5.1 output though.

I assume you are getting multi channel sound though except for the bass?

Yes. I have the player connected to my Yamaha amp via the 6 analogue outputs on the back of the player. I get good sound, but no bass whatsoever. Any ideas how to sort this as it has been bugging me as my downward spiral SACD and Dvd-Audio discs are basically useless without bass.

I am not sure what the problem could be. As I say, I am new to SACD and DVD-A and have only had my new HC kit for a few weeks now (replaced everything recently).

I am using a Yamaha RXV650 amp with my 575 and, even though it took a while to get the player to output the SACD in 5.1, I think it sounds brilliant. If it was down to something in the settings on your 575 I would have thought you would not get any multi channel sound from an SACD..but if you are then I dont know why there is no bass??

Have you tried swapping over the phono's to make sure if is not down to a duff cable?

Yes, tried swapping the cables. I have a Yamaha dsp750, which is basically the same as the 650, I think the only difference is the FM receiver. I'll have to have a play with it all tonight to see what I can get out of it. Do you definately get good bass reproduction from it?

Well I was starting to second guess myself after reading your post so I put the disc on....just listening to Closer now and it sounds pretty good to me. The bass is definitly there (and the sub says it is getting a signal...only an old Paradigm PDR10 but still sounds OK) and sounds nice an defined compared to the standard CD.

I suppose the only problem I have is that I dont have any other SACD's to comapre this one to...so it may sound good to me but compared to others it could be lacking?

If I put the SACD or DVD-Audio disc in and play closer, I get no bass whatsoever. If I switch to the dolby 5.1 track on the DVD-Audio disc and use the digital coaxial connection to my amp, my house feels like it will fall down due to the bass.

Few people know that Mark Knopfler's "Shangri La" CD is actually a hybrid SACD as a standard issue.

Have you set the speaker settings in your 575 ? I'm sure on my 565 I had to tell it that there was a sub attached - only guessing, but it's worth a try.

The lack of sub is a common SACD issue. It's 10db down on the rest of the signals, this is supposedly to prevent overloading if you set your player up to redirect all bass to the sub. The solution to this is either:
    :lesson:
    1) turn the sub level up 10db on the amp compared to what you use for anything else
    2) Use a 5Large+Sw mode on the SACD player rather than the Multichannel Direct mode (these are the sony names, I dontk now what Pioneer call them), then turn the sub up on the SACD players balance controls by 10db.

    As for good discs:
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon (fantastic)
Feeder - Comfort In Sound (lovely sound, songs and a good 5.1 mix)
Moloko - Statues (Fun if you like the band)
Groove Armada - Vertigo (Also well done if you like their music)

Though where SACD really excels is in classical music :D

Go into the menu and look at...

    Initial settings
    Speakers
Subwoofer - it can be on or off, the default is off

These settings only affect the 6ch analogue output, hence why you are getting sub output only through the coax

Re: Keane. Yes it is multi channel. It's available at www.dvdpacific.com for around £7.50 + postage. Order 2 items to save money.

I have had the same problem with bass on sacd's, although not so much on dvd-a material.
    Keene sounds great on sacd.

    Other good sacd's are

    Bjork- vespertine and medulla
    Sting- sacred love

If you can get hold of any blue man group material on dvd-a then do.

I've recently bought a Pioneer 575 ("upgraded" from a Panny RV60) just for multi channel audio and Divx palyback in a single unit.

I too thought the bass was a little lacking at first but I think after more playing around its just more controlled.

You do have to set the SW to "yes" in the audio, initial set up menu and you could also try setting all speakers or the centre and rears to "small" as most base from them will then be diverted to the sub.

If that still doesn't help your amp should have a 5.1/6.1/7.1 set up menu where you can adjust each speakers and the subs volume, probably in + or - 1's (my Marantz 7300 does).

    Hope this helps.

problem with 575 too. nevertheless, october album is interesting. do not get the boston sacd ( free from play 2-3years ago??) is poor excuse for a new issue. in the process of building up a 'new' library too. not very impressed by the coors dvd-audio.
try mdt for classic sacd, play.com for the rest and alo the usual amazon.

    Sorry for the delayed reply.
I haven't got an SACD of The Planets but there are plenty of SACD recordings. The best place to find info on SACDs is at http://www.sa-cd.net

    My personal favorite classical SACDs:
Vaughan Williams - A London Symphony (Chandos). Gloriously rich sound, the only available recording of the longer original version of this symphony.
Ferde Grofe - Grand Canyon Suite (Naxos). Budget label disc but a good recording of some very nice 'film music'esque classical.
Sibelius/Sinding - Violin Concertos (Naxos). Another good budget naxos disc, this time with a fantastic sounding solo violin.
Rodrigo/Vivaldi - Guitar Concertos (Mercury). Only a three channel stereo disc but a total classic recording. A must have if you like the classical guitar sound.

If you're into it, the early Elton John SACD releases are fantastic.

For classical, you can't go wrong with the RCA Living Stereo series.

I second the Sibelius/Sinding recording. I have it on DVD-A and the performance is wonderful.

Hybrid = disc contains both a CD "layer" AND SACD "layer" or "layers" (2 channel and multi channel)

Multichannel = More tracks tahn the 2 stereo tracks (L&R). Usually 5.1 but some discs have 4.0 (eg : Machine Head - Deep Purple)
