since no one wants to help on the cables sub-forum......

i have decided my dad should go for a simple system like
the Denon av1906 and denon sys76ht satellite 7.1 system

what speaker cable gauge do you suggest?? core diameter,
type etc??

also i'm hoping to get a Denon avr2805 and a set of Acoustic
Energy AE EVO 7.1. What cable gauge, dia and type you
would suggest there too??

thanks

Moving to speaker forum...

:hiya:

What sort of budgets are you looking at here? The diea is to spend 10% of the value on cables and intercoinnects.

I used QED Silver anniversary on my fronts and then Gale hyperlitz 250 for all the surrounds. Alternatively you could use Silver ani micro for the surrounds.

The new boy people like is the Chord Company Carnival silver. Both main cables are arroun the £5-6/meter price. Alternatively if your into saving money and doing DIY then you could make yourself some CAt5 or Cat 6 network cable speaker cable. Just look in the cabling forum for more details.

tried in the cables forum but no luck!!

actually I was looking for 2-core speaker cable.....what
diameter or AWG for 115W/channel and 145W/channel,
nominal power.

sorry, but how can i use cat5?? those have 8 cores of
cable, dont they?? do i twist together 2pairs to make
one core and the other 2 pairs to make the 2nd core??

thanks & cheerz :hiya:

The QED and Chord cables all come in 2 core and 4 core for biwiring/bi-amping. It makes no difference what wattage your amps put out. You could use bell wire  or you could use £20 a meter stuff and they would both take it but would sound vastly different.

This is one source of how to do it.

I made cat 6 cables for my fronts and recon they are better than my Silver Ani cable i used to use.

Dfour, what CAT6 cable did you use? I tried the shielded variety and it sounded b****y awful.

Normal 79-strand, from wherever you can find it cheapest. You will not be able to tell the difference between that and any other "decent" cable.

I used Belkin standard unsheilded cat 6 using the 3 cables twisted method. Makes huge cable but I think I would have to spend far to much cable to beat it. Was tmepted by that lovely QED xtube 400  but I dont have the kit to justify the price of it especially as I bi-amp  :nono:

I don't mean to step on anyone's toes, if I do, my apology...

Camorra – a little while ago a double blind listening test was conducted using some sophisticated switching gear to isolate the conductors of each speaker wire being tested. Expensive speaker cables costing several hundred dollars per 3-meter cable were tested against some basic AWG 12, multi-strand lamp cord and some solid steel coat hangers. The speakers used were very expensive, high end. No one could tell any difference in the sound quality between any of those speaker wires. I think using solid steel coat hangers for speaker wire really drives the point home. You can spend as much money as you have on speaker wire, but you can’t improve the quality of the sound. Other will disagree and I support their disagreement.

I think if a person claims to hear a difference between the speakers wires, then they do hear a difference, regardless of any actual existence of a diff or not. The brain is tremendously powerful at using personal bias to color reality, so why fight it. I think everyone should do whatever they need to do to get what they perceive as the best sound quality from their kit, and thus the most enjoyment.

Something else to keep in mind is the suggestion that some percentage of your kit’s cost should be spent on speaker/interconnect cabling. It has no merit except for those that sell such cables and wires. On this side of the pond I have also heard 15% and 20% of the kit’s cost used as references by sellers of cabling. I am a capitalist pig at heart, so I’m ok with whatever someone wants to spend on their cabling, but and I’m equally as ok with DIY.

I have a hard time spending more that $0.25/ft for any speaker cable I don’t have to walk on. Right now I am using Canare StarQuad 4S11 only because of the way it is constructed. We can walk on it without damaging it. But when I get around to burying wires in the wall I will use Beldin 5000UE. If it matters to anyone, my HT kit is close to $20k USD. What's the Brit equiv, about £3?
:)

Suggestions:
Canare StarQuad 4S11 (AWG 14 x 4) $0.63/ft - heavy cable, not recommened unless bi-amp'ing.
Beldin 5T00UP (AWG 10 x 2) $0.27/ft - for those that insist on a 10 gage wire.
Beldin 5000UE (AWG 12 x 2) $0.19/ft - my personal choice.

Prices listed are typical for over here.

Thanks all for the help!!

Quite a good guide to wiring!! :)

Think I'll go for a budget AWG10 or 12.

Nice post
I'm a socialist pig, so my cable cost £20 for the lot ($36??) and I still think I was ripped off.
Wish I'd gone T+E, I could have got it freebie at work (leftovers, not stolen) :smashin:
I would agree that if you hear a difference, you should pay for it, it's just that I don't :smashin:

I tend to agree. I can't really identify any sonic difference betwwen highly priced cabling and the cheap stuff.
But one advantage the exotic cabling has is a lot of it looks really cool. This may be of no importance to most, but I'm a bit of a poseur, so I want my hi-fi to look as cool as possible ;)

It depends on the quality of/how revealing your equipment is.

With a £500 stereo amp and £500 speaker pair, for example, speaker cable should make a monumental difference - I know it does in the many systems I have had over the years. This is not subtle and in some cases the difference is bigger than a component change.

To answer the question though - a £300 Denon package deserves no more than any old wire, in fact it may be included in the box...

The AE system would do fine with Gale XL315 (£2/m) from Mr. Richer.

well, i have heard a difference between some cables, and in a blind test so did my mother.......so mebbe they purposefully make cheaper cables really crappily so the more expensive cables can actually sound better...heh.....(by expensive i mean £10m, not £100m, thats just pointless, there i agree)......

however im smart, when buying my Hifi i make sure the salesperson really wants to close the sale, so i get them to chuck the cable in free or heavily reduced...heh

i have about 8m of biwire Monitor Audio Silver cable and 32m of single wire MA Silver cable......paid around £80 for it all...hehe..quite happy :)
in single wire terms thats 48m at £5/m.....so i paid somewhere around £1.80/m...heh

(some of it was given free, some of it reduced....)

it looks nice, sounds very good.....hey, they even lobbed in the banana plugs as well..lol

dunno if they still do, but Richer Sounds used to chuck in a few metres of cable free as well if the speakers were more than £100.....
