Are you are there's any point in a drive upgrade? I read that MS had started using slightly larger drives than were fitted to the original machines (due to better supply), but the Xbox OS will not take advantage of any extra capacity (over that of the original drive).

Nope with the right mod ; you can rip games and dvds to the hardrive. Speeds up loading times. The Xbox will not recognise a partition greater than 133GB so going greater than 120GB doesn't make much sense. You can also get mame on it with 1500 arcade games!

Have two mates who've already done theirs and it works just fine.
Having trouble sourcing a 120GB 5400rpm HD at short notice: might make do with an 80GB.

Heh heh! works a treat. Huge fun as the modified diagnostic shows up 113GB of free disc space and the Xbox logo is now orange just to show its worked. ( might try the blue one)

Pretty easy to install. Had to buy some torx drivers and I had to hunt around a bit for the 120GB drive . Now I need to get my head round all the software side of things.

    cool

There are so many mods you can do to the Xbox that the mind boggles. For me I'm holding out for the X-Ecuter II chip which should be out within 2 weeks. Once I have that I'll change the original ata/33 cable to an ata/100 to speed things up and change the 8gig HDD (some models have 10gig).

Then comes the fun part... MAME, DVD-X and Linux awaits...

ahhh mod chips, once you start with the xbox all you will do is send games to the drive and never actually play the thing.

    I know ;)

Same here but the debate about how legal MAME ROMs will go on forever I'm sure. As for now though I'm waiting for my Tekki to arrive >_< Its taking its time...

Try goblindirect.com they have Tekki but their release date is a week later than its launch (19th Nov) probably due to stock issues. Prices vary online though so be sure to surf the net before buying.

Cool thanks for the info on tekki.

Been playing with the modded xbox tonight : works brilliantly : games copied to thte hardrive load about twice as fast if not faster ( improvement to Halo was very noticable). And I copied over all my saves too!

Can I ask where you got it from and what is involved in installation?

I've looked atthem but the soldering appears to be potentially fiddly

Its all out there just have a search. The matrix mod requires no soldering just a screw secures it to the mainboard : you have to ensure the required pins line up ( there is a green indicator light to tell you when its correct).

You also need to flash the modchip yourself and you'll need to get a hold of the dashboard software: Again you'll have to do a search.
