I am seriously considering buying a Wii-U to go with my PS4, but not sure that I need both. Don't think I'll get enough use of both.

But I like the look of Zombi-U, New Super Mario Bros-U and Super Mario 3D World. And also play Animal Crossing from the original Wii.

Not sure if I should get one or not.

So here we go guys, open door, convince me I need one...

The Wii U is a perfect companion for the PS4 IMO.

You buy all of the cross plats and Sony exclusives on the PS4

You buy all of the fantastic Nintendo exclusives on the Wii U

There's stacks of great games already out on the Wii U (some of the best games that will be released this generation) and loads of great stuff to come.

Nintendo games are just so different to the stuff you get on your average Playstation/Xbox type device.

It's pretty cheap and it plays Wii games, so you have a huge catalogue to choose from.

If games appeal then go for it. I think at its lower price point its a solid purchase. As cas states you get games on Nintendo you can't get anywhere else. If these games appeal then go for it.

As little as I've played my wii u over the past few months its all worthwhile when a game like Mario 3D and Donkey Kong come along. Well for me it is anyway :)

I also have a ps4 as you probably know Liam but at present there is nothing on it that appeals. The usual launch situation. If the same applies to you go grab a wii u with a few games and that will tide you over perfectly.

    Got to agree with Adam and Cas. A Wii U sitting along side another platform of your choice is a win win IMO. You get the exclusives on both - Nintendo games are top notch and nothing on other platforms come close (yet). like Cas said, PS4 for cross plats 'cos they'll probably be the best - then the exclusives to come. Wii U has an excellent library of quality games right now and more to come;

    Rayman Legends
    Donkey Kong Country TF
    Pikmin 3
    WW HD
    Super Mario 3D Worlds
    Sonic Racing
    Monster Hunter
    ZombiU
    Super Mario Bros
    Trine 2
    Zen Pinball 2
    Nintendo Land
    .......................to name a few then coming soon;

    Mario Kart 8
    X (Monolith)
    Hyrule Warriors
    Smash Bros
    Bayonetta 2
    .......................to name a few.

The 3 games you mentioned will keep you busy/happy for a while until some excellent exclusive/cross plat comes out on PS4..........then Mario Kart 8 will hit the shores in May, which I can't wait for.

Like Adam said, one or two gems that keep arriving will provide an excellent stop gap when PS4 gaming seems dull. To repeat what I said above, it's a win win imo.

Can it play GameCube games like the Wii could?

Aaah Gamecube. I loved Double Dash. I loved Wind Waker. I loved Rogue Squadron. Wrestlemania. I also remember a decent bond game (night fire maybe or something).

As much as I loved all those games; when I hear GameCube I automatically have flash backs to Mario Sunshine. I start to shake uncontrollably in disgust and try to forgot it as fast as I can!!

I'm in the same boat, Liam. I need Mario.

Says here that the WiiU is supposed to be getting GC games on the VC

    Wii U backwards compatibility | Wii U

    It mentions these games specifically..

    • The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (GameCube)
    • Metroid Prime (GameCube)
    • Super Smash Bros. Melee (GameCube)
    • Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube)

If that is true why those games? Already a HD remake of WW out. We have a few Mario platformers, new smash Bros this year.

Metroid prime is a good call but they should have FZero GX in there and Rogue Squadron

No - having said that, GBA games are coming in April and there are a few gems I'm interested in too like Mr Driller and the Metroid Fusion.

I think it's probably quite an old article (possibly from around launch).

There's no reason why they couldn't bring GC games to the store and it would be great to play them on the pad as well.

A fair few GameCube games use the analogue triggers - Mario Sunshine from that list, for example, so they wouldn't be able to replicate the controls on WiiU.

To be fair the game inputs can be amended so that with digital triggers it's the duration of the press, not the level of the press as with analogue triggers. Still baffles me why Nintendo opted for digital triggers with the Wii U though.

I bought my WiiU mainly for ZombiU and the promise of future Nintendo classics such as Mario games, MarioKart etc.

ZombiU alone made the purchase worthwhile as it's a survival horror classic! That together with Mario 3D World's is certainly reason enough to own one and there's MarioKart around the corner, plus of course plenty other great games available.

So yeah, definitely worth buying, and start out with ZombiU ;)

Anyone know the cheapest place for any of the premium bundles? Need to get John Lewis to price match and get it cheaper, as I have some vouchers for there. Just don't want to spend £249 on it, just in case I don't get enough usage out of it :)

Ahh some good prices, but think I will wait for it to drop a little or for a deal I can get John Lewis to price match. Hopefully get it at the £150 mark, which keeps happening over on HUKD, but not been really into getting one until now :) Gonna wait for the next deal to pop up :)

Is it true that the battery on the gamepad is awful? How often do you need to charge yours?

The battery in the Gamepad lasts around 3-5 hours on a full charge depending on what your doing with the Gamepad. Some games do disable the screen when not needed so obviously you will get slightly longer with those games.
However there is a higher capacity battery available that should give around 5-8 hours of play.

Mine lasts around 4 hours which for me personally is enough as I don't tend to game longer then that. Fortunately the charging lead is very long so if you have a socket near buy it doesn't become an issue. I have mine sat in my TV rack now with the charger set up so it can't be moved easily so if I'm running low and still want to play I will just switch to the pro controller.

Just picked up the premium with Zelda for €200 (£165 ish) in Germany on a bit of a whim. After reading these threads I'm starting to get very excited. Always fancied Zombie U so now I have no excuse to pick it up.

I've got the larger capacity battery in my gamepad and it's fantastic. I didn't get many issues with the old one, but occasionally it would run out during a decent gaming session. No such issues with the higher capacity battery :).

Well credit cards are for emergencies, and if me not having one of these isn't an emergency, then I don't know what is! LOL

Really tempted to just put it on there!

So have you guys put a screen protector on your gamepad? Just with it being Resistive and having a stylus, I guess it would scratch easy?

Might pick one up tomorrow! :)
