    Hi,

In my room to have 7.1 would mean having rear speakers approx 15 to 20 inches from the listening position. Is this too near?

    Thanks

Yes. Ideally you need at least a metre or more behind the listening position. If they're too close the sound doesn't appear to come from behind you. You can try angling them down to get a better effect but you really need them to be further back.
