I'm currently using the SP/Dif out on my AsusA7N8X Deluxe MB and I am ready to buy a real soundcard.

Output will be almost entirely for Movies, with the odd concert DVD thrown in.

I've not been lucky in the past, I tend to find out newer and better products come out just after I make my purchases, so before I part with my dosh....

Does anyone know of a Soundcard that is due imminently that would be worth waiting for?

If not, what would be your choice of THE sound card to go for purely for movies via SP/Dif out into a Lexicon MC-1 (one day MC-8 I hope) Processor?

    Cheers,

    Mark.

    Mark,

The RME Digi 96/8PAD is now down to £200 due to the imminent arrival of the Hammerfall HDSP 9632 info here, if you want to wait this will probably be the last soundcard you'll ever buy!

    Thanks Steve,

[qoote]imminent arrival of the Hammerfall HDSP 9632 [/quote]

That looks to be the puppies nuts! With the DigiPad price at £200, how much will they be wanting for it's replacement I wonder?

Would it be overkill for home theatre?

I'm sure I've seen a post from Branxx saying that he'd seen it for about £300 delivered, is it overkill? Only you can answer that :D I'm more than happy with my Digi96/8, may consider the Hamerfall for my Audio Server if the Linn Unidisk proves to be a step too far into debt!!

Think I'll wait for John to try first ;)

I'm having a real problem not ordering a hammerfall. My room is still in bits so I have a few weeks to think about it.

Nathan DID have a vidcam with him on his phone he just wasn't quick enough!

BTW. I'll be putting some more panels up this afternoon if anyone wants to come over and potentially get £200 from the fat bird on TV:D

Anyone got a crash helmet I can borrow?:suicide:

Ok, so Hammerfall is the card of choice, so IF I buy a soundcard it looks like that's the one.

    But...

Considering I only use SP/Dif out and only that that exclusively for movies (I never play 2 Channel music in this room), would this soundcard be a massive improvement over the onboard SP/Dif on my Asus A7N8X Deluxe?

I'm using a Lexicon MC-1 Processor if that makes any difference to opinions.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Reading through other similar threads, the consensus seemed to be that a new card wouldn't make much difference for DD/DTS...at least, not comparable to the difference you'd get when listening to PCM stuff.

I'm in the same situation and would also like confirmation of this view - I'm currently running of my mobo's SP/DIF and am just considering a small upgrade to a SB Live 5.1 or something.

I think the RME card can make a considerable difference with DD and DTS, but there are a lot of variables here, I haven't quite figured it out yet. When people say their PC sounds crap compared to a regular DVD player, they are probably correct, but it isn't necessarily the sound card at fault. It could be a configuration issue. Its a similar issue to video stutter, its very hard find the route cause, but with audio its also harder to detect the problem in the first place.

    Guys,

I don't know what's happening with this card as here it mentions that its got 24bit 96 Khz DACs
    BUT
Here it mentions that its got 24bit 192 Khz DACs which would be even better.
Anyone know which DACs its got?

    Thanks.

    Steve.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

I'm ready to buy, only really interested in SP/Dif out and possibly Analogue fo 2 channel music but may go for the 9652 because there may be features I could/would use that I don't know I want/need, especially as I have balanced inputs available on my power amps.

What's the MADI version got that may be of use to a HTPC BTW?

Oh yes, and where's the cheapest place to buy?

Where's Steve Bate when you need him!? :D

    Mark,

I got confirmation from RME that its got 24bit 192 Khz DACs.
Go for it! let us know how you get on, where you buy from and how much for.
I'm torn between this card and the upcoming Denon AX11 dvd player with DVI.

    Steve.
