    Hi,

Am about to buy Quad speakers for AV + Hi-Fi; have auditioned and am v impressed with the way that they literally disappear into the room.

Can anyone advise on what finish the 21/11/12Ls + L centre are available in? The brochure is silent so far as I can see, apart from showing a side-by-side image of the smaller speakers in black, rosewood and bird's eye maple, whereas one image in the brochure seems also to show a plain maple finish (which I prefer).

The local dealer (in Thailand) has no clue and is offering me black or ebony - which I believe is a special? I also saw some time ago a Yew finish which I particularly liked but understand that this is also a special? Is it true that Quad will be producing special 'limited edition' finishes, and if so how does one find out in advance?

As a final note the local guy has also advised that the centre is only available in black - any comments?

Is it possible to contact Quad direct?

    Thanks for response.

I've seen the centre in rosewood, so that's obviously not true.

I have the centre and 21L's in Rosewood so it definitely isn't true

    The standard finishes are:

    Maple
    Birds Eye Maple
    Black
    Rosewood

Any other finishes are usually specials, the Yew finish is a permanent special in the USA I believe.

The Rosewood finish and the Birds Eye Maple finishes are my faves of the standard ones. The Yew is very fetching too.

I can't understand the attraction and popularity of the Birds Eye Maple. Not my cup of tea! :D

The reason I like it is that it is different :) Not your standard one tone finish, adds a bit of texture to the design :D Wouldn't have fit well in my room though, hence I went for the Rosewood.

I have the 22L in the Yew finish. But I do believe the Yew is a Special, Limited Finish option. From what I understand, they are (Quad) no longer making them. What's available...is what's available. IAG may still have a few in stock, or maybe a dealer may have one or two somewhere.

Also, once in a while you can find some used/second-hand Quad L-Series in Yew, being sold on Audiogon or ebay.

What about that Standard Maple finish? Is that available in UK/Europe?

Here in the United States, the limited Yew, Rosewood, Black and Birdseye Maple are the available finishes. I've never seen or heard of the Standard Maple being in the U.S.A.

I also dislike the Birdseye Maple finish. I find it gaudy.

There are 250 pairs of Ebony available for each model at the moment, looks nice, like a very dark wood with a fairly heavy grain.

Available in the UK/Europe market? Or worldwide?

I'd love to have a look at this Ebony finish.

Wonder if it's available in the USA?

    Really?

So Rosewood is also considered ..."Ebony" ?

Is this some kind marketing ploy on Quad's part, or is it a cultural difference; where as in the US it's called Rosewood, but it's called Ebony in the UK/Europe regions?

It's called Rosewood in the UK too, but I think it is just the dealers description of the colour in Thailand where the original requestor of info is from.

I think it is just terminology.

I don't think they are the same. Rosewood is what it is called down here also (i have centre + 12L's). Ebony came later.

Out of interested the colours have changed quite noticably!
I got my 12L's 2 years ago, and they are very dark, my centre bit after, its a little lighter, mate got his 22L's just after that, similar to my centre but a bit lighter again, and his centre is MUCH ligher than all of them.

This "may" be by intention as these early mondels look almost black in anything but a very bright room, his centre look very rich red rosey colour in comparison.

    Hi,

Thanks to all for the input. For my part, the rosewood seems too dark/red, the bird's eye maple too fussy - although it would hide scratches and the boy's biro(!), and black too plain: this leaves maple which in an ideal world would be my preferred choice, although as mentioned, the dealer here says it's not available; whatsmore ebony while striking has too much contrast.

When Quad state that they will have special limited edition finishes, will this cover all speakers - it will be pretty difficult nigh on impossible to get a matched set of 5 speakers in anything other than the standards?

Final note - the dealer did add that a centre in bird's eye maple would take 2 months to order!

Oh well, guess I'll print out the webpage and take to the dealer to get his comments.

    Once again thanks.

    HT

I found this picture of the alleged Ebony finish.

This is not the same as Rosewood. I guess this is the root of the confusion.

Has anyone actually seen this finish in person?

Eww not my cup of tea! :) Looks a bit kitcsh.

I've just received a pair of 12L's in black. I have to say I am absolutely blown away by the build quality. I knew it would be good, based on all the reviews. But I was still extremely impressed. I can't really fault it to be honest. They even came with a pair of nice white gloves to handle them with! :)

I chose black because it will go with pretty much any room colour scheme. I thought the maple was slightly too pale in colour, otherwise I would have got them. Didn't like the birdseye maple.

I haven't received the rest of my hifi setup yet, but if it sounds half as good as it looks I'll be extremely happy!! :)
