Ray - a quick review

Watched the above for the first time last night - didn't see it at the cinema (actually I never go the cinema - why would I want to? :D ).

Don't want to give much away for those who haven't seen it and intend to, but I thought it was brilliant. Foxx's performance is breathtaking - he has every mannerism of Ray Charles totally mastered, and the movie draws you in from the very start. It's dramatic, tragic, sad and hugely entertaining at the same time. It certainly is brutally honest too - really very little is held back about what he was really like. PQ is good, but not great, and sound is very front-focussed as I suppose should be expected, although some very nice use of surrounds in places, expecially during the (room-filling) rendition of "Hit the Road Jack", and also when Ray is learning to listen. "Georgia on My Mind" just had me beaming from ear to ear.

It's rare that I watch extras on most DVDs that I have, but this one had me clamouring to see all of them, and they're pretty good too.

Overall, I'd say 9 out of 10. I haven't seen the other Oscar contenders, so it'd be unfair to say that Foxx must get the award next month, but if there's a better performance out there then I'll almost find it hard to believe. Excellent
