Just got a Canon G5 which can take images in the RAW format.
I'd like to work on these images in Photoshop 7 but when I try to open the images downloaded from my camera there's nothing in the file?
do I require an additional plug-in?

    Cheers, Paul

    Hello Paden,

You need either Photoshop Camera Raw plugin or I use Breezebrowser. (with D60)

There are other more expensive Raw convertors available, such as capture one. Altough Capture one is for SLR cameras.

There should be a Canon raw convertor for download ? , but I doubt this is as useful as Breezebrowser etc.

Breezebrowser has a free trial download, well worth a try.

If you are going to buy adobe raw, check it supports the G5 before buying.

Raw is awesome when you understand how to get the best from it !

    Good luck,

    Mark.

    :smashin: Mark

I did get a RAW converter with the camera & have had a play, I'm just more familiar with the layout of Photoshop.
    I'll checkout Breezebrowser as well.

    Cheers, Paul

Paden, would be interested to hear how you get on, my G5 arrives *fingers crossed* today.

Mark, can you offer an websites that give tips to getting the best out of the RAW format, or any from yourself for that matter?

Sorry if I've hijacked the thread, it seems to be inkeeping with the topic.

    Here are a few links:

    Understanding DSLR Workflow

Read about converting raw to 16 bit tiff etc.

Remember to profile the monitor, use adobe Gamma etc.
If the monitor has menus to select color temperature, select 6500K before doing the profiling.
Profiled monitor will probably look rubbish until you get used to it.

Have a look at Fred Miranda , if there are any actions for your camera they are worth trying.

RAW files converted to Tiffs look really dark when converted. you tweak them in photoshop, as you would a Jpeg etc.

Raw files are huge, the tiffs are even bigger :)

Working with big Tiffs will bring your PC to its knees.

Photoshop 8 should suport raw, whenever that comes out.

Someone else here must know lots about Raw etc, just a hobby for me :)

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Mark.
