Me and a friend (Chris) will be driving 4500 miles from Edinburgh to Rome at the end of June as part of Rust to Rome.

We have to do this in a car that has cost less than £500 and have purchased a 1996 Toyota Celica as a result. If the car breaks down on route we will need to repair it ourselves on the roadside, using the tools we take with us. Prior to this undertaking the most I had ever done on a car was change a wheel, so my mechanical know how is non-existent, which should lead to some interesting times on the road to Rome (I have breakdown cover/scrapyards for the way back).

Whilst this isn’t a charity rally, we have decided to use this as an opportunity to raise money for Orchid. Orchid are the Leading UK Male Cancer Charity that work to provide support and awareness of male cancers, as well as funding research. More information on Orchid can be found here Orchid | Fighting Male Cancer With 43,000 men every year being diagnosed with a male cancer the work Orchid do to support them and their families is invaluable.

Any support you can provide us would be gratefully received, if you do wish to donate you can do so here Ed Brumhead is fundraising for Orchid Cancer or by texting Rome96 followed by the amount to 70070 (note this will be charged to your phone bill).

You can also follow our progress online by liking our facebook page at www.facebook.com/TeamGoNads2015.

Here we are with the car we hope will carry us to Rome.

Donated, hope it all goes well. The dilema is going to be the balance in loading the car up. Tools and spare parts or snacks

Cheers guys. Think were going to bank on the others having a good selection of tools and try to avoid anything too heavy.

There was another trip this year over the Swiss alps and 20% didn't make it!

It actually only cost £420 :)

It also looks far better than it is, you can't see the driveshaft and cv joints knocking :D

Your buddy tell you that, "Mr. I've only ever changed my tires"? lol.

Yah, it looks pretty good for a 420 car. That's the risk with buying a good looking used car... the engine could be a bag of rocks.

EDIT: Do they have "Haynes Manuals" over there? Basically gives you instructions with pictures on how to fix EVERYTHING within a car.

Haha yeh, my mate is the mechanical one, he's also the one who told me to buy the car! He has a lot to answer for :)

We do have Haynes but my mate doesn't like to use them. He has a similar attitude to all instruction manuals, we have had some heated exchanges :)

All's fair in love and war... but with cars you should use a manual. Just hide it in the car so if something breaks you can be like "the HAYNES manual says you suck and we should do this instead"... he'll love you for it.

Seriously though, good luck with this. Are you guys allowed to bring spare parts?

We are allowed spares once underway but you are limited to what can be done at the side of the road and we don't have support trucks like top gear. I have got a spare clutch just incase but that's about it.

Damn, sounds like fun. 4500 miles in a car you're not sure if it'll make it or not and then you've gotten fix anything that breaks...

    You're braver men than I.

Hey guys, been a great couple of days. Banburgh castle yesterday followed by a stop at Nottingham.

Today was Heritage Motor Museum which was a good visit. Very interesting and some lovely cars there. Then it was on to Ace Cafe and down to Dover.

This is where it started going wrong. We missed the M2 turning and headed down the M20 instead, thinking all would be fine. Suddenly we hit traffic, horrible horrible traffic. We jump on RAC to see what's happening and Operation Stack was in affect and the M20 is the stack area. Next was, why is operation stack on? We use CBs to communicate so tend not to have the radio on. Very quickly our faces turned white - Calais was closed! Our first problem was getting out of the traffic. We were taken off at the A20 junction with everyone else but rather than follow everyone else we turned off and cut over to the A2 :)

We are now booked on the channel tunnel to get us over. France here we come!

Does look like a fun trip, something I'd certainly look at doing in a couple of years.
