there were rumours that this was going to be 4:3 only because the yanks don't like widescreen. has anyone seen confirmation one way or the other as CD-Wow have it down as 1.85:1.

IGN posted the box cover and press release details which stated 4:3. They said that JW does not want season 4 to be widescreen, as it has "framing issues".

Having seen the R2 in 16:9, the framing issues do not appear often (about 10 times throughout the season) and happen when a stock film (the moon rising or distant shot of sunnydale) is in the 4:3 format. Black bars are added, but these transition shots only last seconds.

The only other framing issue (and probably why JW wants it in 4:3) is when Willow is far left of the 16:9 frame (out of the broadcasted 4:3 frame) and is dubbed.

The r2 16:9 image is of a very high quality. The framing issues are rare. The 16:9 frames are not used to there potential; season 4 was very much a 4:3 show, but the extra breathing room at the sides is very welcome imho. http://www.r2-org.co.uk done a comparison between the r2 16:9 dvd and the 4:3 sky, have a search and take a look for yourself!

link doesn't seem to work, are there comparison screenshots?

you mentioned stock film in 4:3, are the bars on the disc or does it prompt a switch to 4:3 on the display?

Sorry about the link, I meant http://www.r2-dvd.org. Use the search engine in there. Yes there are screenshots.

The transitions are 16:9 but have black bars. It does not happen on every one, just where they didn't have a 16:9 copy of it. About 10 times or so, they are so quick you hardly notice.

You can get this boxset for £40 r2 from dvd.co.uk btw.

I prefer Buffy and Angel in 4:3 anyway - it feels much more claustrophobic :smashin:

If it was a film then that's different, but its only a tv show.

Season one of Angel is only available in 4:3 because the w/s version was lost in a fire, so I've heard.

there are petitions in the US to do just that. widescreen displays are not the norm over there as they are becoming over here, the yanks don't like their black bars. and stop spoiling for a fight!:boring:

Apocalypse answer your PM mate, where did you get your R1 Angel from?

BTW James, dvdfile reported a problem on the earlier episodes of the r1 season 1 of angel. Strange picture artifacts:

If you want to buy it r2, try this link:

If it helps, I have the r2 and a HGS-15 and must agree with apoc, the bass in angel makes you wonder if, unlike most TV shows (accept Roswell), the sound designers know what they are doing.

have you seen these before, or is this a virgin screening?

upgrading from my treasured VHS collection which I really should get rid of once replaced (although I doubt I'll be able to bring myself to do it:D ). Are you watching the current series on Sky? without wanting to sound all fanboy... OMG:eek: !!

Yeah, the last two eps have been so good! Apoc nowish was so cool at the end, wesley with the dual handguns:) Its a shame that alot of the fight scenes are hard to following due to previously discussed cropping, but hey thats another reason to buy the DVDs:)

    Enjoy!

BTW, if roswell high ever comes to DVD, you must buy it. Not only does it kick angel and buffy ass(and I am a huge bufy and angel fan), it has the best sound design I have every heard from a TV show. Massive bass, almost constant surround use (and lots of split surround effects when using PL2).

On a slightly unrelated topic (and it might have already been said on here), Once More With Feeling is getting released the same day as series 6. The OMWT disc will have a 5.1 sound track  ...but the series will only have 2.0.

Looks like I'm buying both then

Actually, I have heard from every1 who has the pre-release review version that once more is 2.0. The 5.1 is a mistake on the press release.
