Hi, if and when you record something from Sky+ which has DD 5.1 soundtrack and you record it on to a DVD can you retain the DD 5.1sound on the DVD?

Depends if the DVD recorder has an optical or coaxial digital input. I think most if not all just have analog audio inputs so I don't think it's possible on current recorders (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Yes - although it's been mooted by all the major players in the DVDR market. It's possible they may even beat KISS to it on this.

I was under the impression that 'domestic'(i.e. set top boxes) dvd recorders DO NOT record in 5.1 whereas PC dvd Recorders CAN record in 5.1? Is there any truth in this at all???

If not i'll be buggered cos this has been the main reason i've not bought a dvd recorder!!

    Thanks in advance

    Neil

No current set top recorders will record in 5.1. There are proposals for this to change in the near future and KISS have announced there upcoming piece of kit.

PC solutions CAN record in 5.1 assuming you have the appropriate hardware although the PC capture devices are well below the quality of set top DVD recorders for picture.

Personally I'm not really sure of the benefit of Dolby Digital on a set top recorder yet. People who are interested in recording 5.1 movies probably want the best picture quality as well and this is invariably found in the commerical DVD release.
