I had SkyHD installed last Saturday, but it wasn't by Sky themselves, it was by an "contractor"

Anyway, after installing the SkyHD box, they asked me how long I'd had the Sky+ box, and what I intended to do with it. I told them I'd had it about 2 years and that I was keeping it.

He then tried to warn me that Sky may charge me £400 for keeping the box, as its their property.

Now I'm fairly sure this is utter bull, as I PAID for my box when I got it, so I think they were just trying scaremonger techniques to try and make a few quid on my old Sky+ box!

I suggest calling Sky and let them know that people that they are employing are trying to pull a fast one on their customers.

There was a story on this forum about a similar incident.

The husband was out when the SkyHD was installed leaving the wife in the house to let the intaller in, when the husband got back he found the Sky+ box gone. He complained to Sky and I think he got a new box or something, but it is a reasonably common occurrence.

I dont think I've heard yet of an Actual SKY Technician doing an install, it all seems to be subcontractors that can be hit or miss when you get a half decent one

I think I may ring Sky then.

At the time I thought "on yer bike" and had a laugh about it, a proper couple of "likely lads" but the more I think about it, the more sly I think they were, especially trying to say I'd get charged £400.

Well dodgy in my view. The lads who installed my HD didn't express any desire for the old Sky+ box. They did give me numbers including one of their own personal numbers to use in case of any problems.

I would definitely let Sky know about this if I were you. The box would probably have ended up on ebay for money in their pockets.

My installer today was a Sky employed installer. Proper uniformed etc.

No wait for channels to appear, he would not leave until everything was A+

Phoned last night with his arrival time, took his shoes off before entering my house and cleared up after he left.

    Very professional service

They can and will take it away ...... if they think that you don't know it's yours and I guess there are plenty of gullable people out there who don't realise the box is their's.

Can't agree more about the Sky engineers.

When I had my Sky+ originally installed, he was a really pro guy, hidden wires etc, setup quickly, was mazed by the projector setup etc, genuine nice local guy.

When I moved house, it was a different Sky engineer, again a local guy, nice install, although he had a nightmare with the dish (neighbours' dish blocking the line of sight)

Then the guy who did my original Sky+ install came to the missus' house the two weeks ago to install Sky+ for them, again a nice guy, the girls were going into town for some dinner, and I stayed behind, he acctually said he'd prefer it if someone stayed in the house with him.. tidied up after himself etc.

Then my HD installers.... couldn't get out quick enough and tried to rip me off!! :rotfl:

I had a similar experiance (in York).
When I had Sky HD installed, I wanted it putting in another room (already had Sky+ in one room).
I wasn't going to pay for the multiroom and was going to buy a £20 free to air card from SKY for the Sky+ box (I knew this would remove the recording features of the box).
When the engineer turned up and I told him I wanted HD in a new room he told me that was not possible, he had only come to swap the boxes over. I told him that was not the case, since I had checked with SKY before placing the HD order and was told I could have HD installed in a new room.
The engineer, knowing that I would lose the recording features of the plus box, told me the only way he would install the HD box in another room would be for him to take my sky+ box away, although he said he would leave me with a basic box.
Knowing that a SKY + box is worth more than a basic sky box I told him that I was not happy and would not proceed on this basis. I said I would call sky and cancel the installation and he could go away.
He then backed down and did what I wanted and sky had promissed (reluctantly).

I could not belive the cheek of the guy! ... BEWARE!

Which is all very well ... as long as the gullable people are reading your post. There are ten million Sky subscribers and I would imagine that many of them don't come here .... gullable or not! ;)

    Indeed.

I think it should be made clearer that the box is yours or stop contractors (which wont happen).

Its theft at the end of the day.

Cant believe these stories, so bad being sly with people who dont know any different. Using your position is one thing but effectively stealing is rediculous.

My experience was good though thankfully. The guy who installed my HD was a sub-contractor but he made sure the dish was aligned properly, run whatever cables I wanted, made sure everything was ok and gave me his personal business number if I had any questions. Very happy with his service.

Just out of curiosity, how does it stand if you're still in your initial 12 month contract?, ie can you still keep the box?

Yes - because eventually you will get to the end of your initial 12 month contract.
If you don't pay - attempt to break the contract Sky will just send the debt collectors after you.
So yes, even if you're within your 12 months you can keep the box

I got told by my installer that he would have to climb on the roof due to the cable or where the dish was and that it would cost me another £120.

I sat there for like 10 seconds and told him to **** off, complained to Sky and they sent out one of there own, the dish is in the V on the side of the house, the guy had it done in 5 minutes and went no where near the roof.

All I got was an apology from Sky and told that they would take action that it wouldn't happen again.

An engineer is a professionally qualified professional. A Sky installer is just that, ie. an installer. No disrespect to the installer but we really must stop calling these guys 'engineers', cos they are anything but engineers. Trying to think of an analogy but struggling to come up with one.

Can you please update us when you do; i'd be interested in hearing the outcome.
It's certainly made it easier for me to make the decision that i will be home when it's being installed to ensure there is no funny business.
