Questions Regarding Media Streaming And Conversion.

I downloaded a clip yesterday that was 121mb in size and wouldnt stream to my ps3 - corrupt data error in tversity. will look into that error later but i wanted to burn it to a dvd anyway so i set about that.

I downloaded a video converter called SUPER as it was recommended by a friend and I wanted a tool to convert to Nintendo DS video format.

Anyway what I want to know is how do I create a DVD using SUPER it seems very hard. I downloaded a clip that is 121mb in size, I used SUPER to convert to VOB DVD compliant hoping then to burn in nero. It wouldn't burn it though it came up with an error regarding file size - it was 2 and a bit gb. I read on the site I had to split the vob to burn it but I couldnt find a simple free tool to do it so my question is will setting it to another output container help or does anyone know how i can do this. I would try loads of things myself but when it takes quite a while to encode so thought I would ask here.

I basically want to convert to a file I can open in Nero and burn a dvd straight from. Is there another tool to do this quickly easily and free?

I have some videos and clips and some home movies on dvd, I know I can stream the ones I have on my hard drive onto my ps3 but thats only in mpeg2

What is the best format to use for these clips, would it be mp4?

Also what would be the best way and format to get my dvd's onto my hard drive to either stream or add to disc to put on ps3 hard drive?

One final question - I hyave downloaded some clips that are supposed to be HD but have looked at the file setup and it is an avi in xvid format but res shows as 624x352 that is not near hd is it? If I managed to get some hd clips what format would I need to have them to play on ps3 in full quality?

Anyone?

The main thing I want to do now is get my home dvd's I created onto my pc in good quality and be able to access them through tversity on the ps3.

What would be the best way to go about doing this?

I had a quick look myself and ripped the dvd to hard drive then converted to MP4 in Super using the same res settings etc as in the VOB as identified using gspot. I then converted these into MP4 and the resulting file sizes are bigger than the VOB why is this?

I want to have these on my pc without losing any quality but get a smaller file size if possible.

Is it?

I currently use premiere elements 4 for editing my home movies until now I have always exported to dvd using prem el but I ma now using my pc to store all my media and stream to ps3 to save discs getting damaged by the kdis. What would be the best format to export in that the ps3 can play natively. When working on the files they are in dv-avi format. What format and settings and format would people suggest? Should add my camcorder is an sd widescreen mini-dv sony.

can you export to MP4. I think that'd be the best option if you can.

I am trying to set up my ps3 to play all my backed up media, at present I am using a 500GB ext USB2 Drive connected to my pc and streaming to ps3. I was thinking about buying a nas enclosure to turn it into a proper server but that would cost some coin so what I was thinking is a reverse of what I have now and have my hard drive attached to my ps3 and then play it from there as I dont need it on any other machine at present. The reason for this is noise and convenience, I dont want the pc on all the time as it is in our spare bedroom and creates a lot of noise and heat and also its not on all the time so its a pain having to go upstairs and turn it on when needed. I have a couple of questions about this:

1. If I have TVersity on my PC can I copy files over straight to the external hard drive?

2. Can I access this media the same way I do now using TVersity or does it have a different configuration for navigation or access menu because I like how it is split at the moment by media type?

3. Can I copy files back from this hard drive to my pc to edit, for example if I have some home videos on the hard drive attached to ps3 can I copy it back to pc to work on without moving the drive back to my pc as mine has a power supply?

4. Also I have seen mention of file size limits, this hasnt affected me as I am streaming my media but if I have it on a hard drive attahced to the ps3 would this changes and if so what is the limit?

I have seen red kawa file server for ps3 which enables you to access files from your pc on your ps3 couldnt this work the other way round using some sort of web browser command?

1. I have an external drive attahced to my ps3, when I access media from my pc over network when I click copy it automatically moves it to my internal drive. Can I change that and select which folder I want to put it in?

2. Dont suppose anyone has found a better way of accessing media on an external drive yet such as organising by genre or date for pics as I have read you can on internal?

3. I have my media library in wmp11 and I have added thumbnails to some music and not to others but it has been added automatically. I have since just copied my whole music folder to an external hard drive for use with my ps3 but some thumbnails dont show when viewing them. Is this the files I havent added pictures to manuallly and how can I sort this as they all show in wmp11 as having thumbnails.

1. Yes. You need to press triangle on the file, goto information, and there your can change which folder it is in. Pain in the arse, but a way it is.

2. Dunno sorry!

In response does this mean I have to copy it to my internal drive first then move it or can i do this before copying and select where to copy it to?

I am ripping my DVD's to VOB files at the moment and they play back anyway on the ps3 but I have renamed them to .mpg as this makes them playable in wmp. My query is that when viewing them they show the wrong length, some show weird times and some show as 00:00. They play OK but it would be nice to have the time correct, does anyone know what causes this i.e. type of rip, joining vobs etc

and also if this can be fixed?

Do they definitely play ok ? Have you checked the sound ?

I did the same thing, joined up 2 sets of VOB for one movie (to keep below the 4GB limit), first part played fine, second part showed 00:00 and played fine, just had no sound....

When you press the triangle button during playback, do you have the same options you do as DVD playback, as on mine i've not got the upscaling/display options for some reason ? Although i've not tested the actual DVD...

I havent tested them fully but they seem to play OK, I am tinkering with some converting at the moment but when thats done I will try it.

I'm currently trying to find the best way to get my xvids that wont play to work.

Guys, I put this post in another thread earlier ...

Have got the ps3 set up on my network to use the twonky media server embedded in a QNAP TS109 pro NAS. Generally works really good. However, when streaming a DVD [ 1 VOB] over the network there appears to be stuttering after maybe 30 minutes and the 5.1 surround sound keeps changing to 2.1. Happens at the same point every time. Trying the same DVD from the same source with XBMC there is no problem. The XBMC had a very similar problem a year or so ago. Anyone got any ideas. I combined the DVD into 1 VOB cos the ps3 won't do DVD menus or play VOBs sequentially. Do you think its ever likely to do this? Also if you put up the display features it only shows the DVD as being approx an hour long whereas its 2h15m. Again XBMC does it correctly. Only goes to show how good XBMC is. Lets hope they can get it working on the ps3 soon.
