Hi, does anybody know if the new release of Once Upon A Time In America (R2) comes spread over the 2 discs? (Lawrence of Arabia stlye) or is it one disc for the film and one disc for the features.

Same question goes for the forthcoming Gangs Of New York region 2 release.

    Cheers

I got my reg 1 copy of OUATIA today and the film is spread over two discs, so I would imagine the reg 2 is the same. Does it matter?

Its inconvenient dont u think. Don't get me wrong I'll still get it, but so many people go on about dvd technology, yet the format is still not big enough for good quality tranfers of long movies to fit onto a single side of a disc.

I've read the Gangs Of NY R1 is over two discs - so R2 will be 2 most prob. However I've heard region 4 Gangs fits on 1 disc with a nice picture & DTS, can anyone confirm this?

I dont mind swapping discs, as long as the break is in an appropriate place. With long films like OUATIA, Godfather 2 and Dances With Wolves it gives a chance for a drinks/toilet break for everyone at the same time, rather than 2 or 3 separate pauses.

Prior to DVD, I was laserdisc owner. This involved a 20 - 30 second pause while the player went from side one to side two and on films over two hours, a disc change aswell. DVD is okay by me

Just watched "Once upon a time in America" and was really p***** off by the stupid way in which they handled the break between the 2 discs.

At the end of disc 1 - roughly half way through the movie - the film stops in the middle of an incident and continues on Disc 2 with more of the same incident, with what I thought was a reasonably judicious piece of cutting.

But what is really annoying is that about 30 mins later up comes a title card reading "Intermission", fade to black for a few seconds and then the movie continues. Why couldn't disc 2 have started here?

    Well done Warners!

Anyone know if the R1 is the same?

yep, it's essentially a flipper. Breaks up the pacing of the film and is not as its meant to be seen.

    that sounds terrible!:(

Thats sounds awfull - u wait so long for a movie like this on dvd. And then they turn out this crap.

As seen on his post above mcmullanbrush has R1 OUATIA, so he'd know if the split's in the same place. I'd be amazed if it wasn't.

Clearly if a film is split at an inappropriate moment it is a crime. I do not dispute that. I will be watching it tonight so will let you know tomorrow. I am sure it will be in the same place.

On reg 2 Ride With The Devil there are two fade to black cuts in the middle of the film which would have been ideal places for a layer change. Instead they stick the layer change in the middle of a scene, in the middle of a sentance and in the middle of a word ***

bowenjones - thanks for that link, I'd like to believe it's true. But I doubt it, DTS will be on it no doubt be it 1 disc or 2. I'll find out early next week if its split as I've pre ordered it.

I didnt watch OUATIA last night, but according to the chapter list, the region 1 splits the disc at the intermission. Thats a relief.

I cant play the thing right now, but I can tell you that disc one has 44 chapters on it the last 4 being
41 - Deborah on his mind
    42 - The Drive Home
    43 - The train station
    44 - Intermission

Disc 2 has 15 chapters on it, the first 3 are
45 - Maxs way with women
    46 - Two hits
47 - Stink of the streets.

I hope this helps, if you can wait til tomorrow I will be able to view the actual DVD

Ye mate - If you could just let us know for sure once you've watched it. I can't believe they've changed the split for R2, thats stupid.

the_pauley - Do the R2 chapters differ from the ones above?

    No probs

The region 1 comes in one of those fold out cardboard sleeves. The original USA cinema release was badly cut by the studio and there are explanitory notes on this DVD indicating which chapters contain the formerly missing scenes.
What is the reg 2 packaging like anyone?

Stace - thanks for clearing that up, it makes sense. What region version is this article about? though it probally doesn't matter.

Looks like the rumour posted by bowenjones earlier could be true about R2 Gangs Of NY, just seen this R4 review below. It says both R4 & R2 will be on 1 disc with disc 2 solely for extras. It says R1 was only split because of increased pixelization which wasn't needed & doesn't offer better picture. Ummm.

I have checked the film and as stace's link says, disc one ends at 120 mins after chapter 34. The disc menu correctly states this although the packaging says chapter 44.
It seems that this is all the fault of Sergio Leone who put the intermission in the wrong place, what a bufoon:rolleyes:

    ???

Why do you presume it's Leone's fault?

The Intermission (not the disc change) comes at a perfect point in the story and makes pefect emotional sense where it is.

Just because he did not antcipate the arrival of DVD when making the movie over 20 years ago does not make him a buffoon!

I wouldn't bet the house on the claims made in that story, stace! There's a thread on another forum (don't think we're allowed to say which) where film historian Michael Brooke argues that those same facts about the film's Canne screening are lifted from an unsubstantiated source.

Can anyone confirm if the R2 version is indeed 9 minutes shorter than the R1 version. dvdcompare.net say it is, but i've read that the R2 is the 'Full Director's Cut' as well

Not that I care as I have the R1 version.
