I think I have found the perfect replacement to my Samsung 709!

The Toshiba SD-500E seems to do everything that I have wanted..

However, I want to confirm a few things:-

    1. Does it support MP3? Home Cinema Choice say it does

    2. Is it affected by RCE (After its been mod'd by a reputable supplier)

    3. Does it play SVCDs

    4. Are there any CDR compatablilty issues?

    5. How fast is can it fast-farward/rewind?

If the answer to most of these (specifically the SVCD issue), then I might well be buying one!

I look forwards to your reply

Its strange.. Looking at the review and the specifications of this model, I thought that it would be really popular.. But I get the feeling that no-one has one..

Someone out there must be able to give some feedback?

I do not have one but i know somebody who does, but i'll try to help out.

    1. Does it support MP3? Home Cinema Choice say it does

Yes it does play MP3 discs.

    2. Is it affected by RCE (After its been mod'd by a reputable supplier)

Techtronics told me that a RCE mod should be ready by the time they have full stock of the player. i.e. Few Weeks

    3. Does it play SVCDs

I am sorry I do not know, but i'll try to find out.

    4. Are there any CDR compatablilty issues?

I am not sure on this one sorry, i'll try to find out.

    5. How fast is can it fast-farward/rewind?

Again, i dont know the answer to this.

Sorry I couldent be of more help. I'll phone my friend to find out for you. The reason why its no so popular is because nobody has full stock yet.

Jon - I too am interested in the Tosh 500 but I am also waiting to see what Techtronics sell it for - I have one of their modded Pioneers & have had no problems with it -
They are also listing a new JVC DVD-A player due out soon which may be worth a look
It looks like it will be a year or so B4 DVD-A machines are anything other than top spec (DTS & DD on board etc) which is really annoying when you already have a DTS receiver able to do this ... Paul [IMG]

The JVC that is due out is the XV-D723GD. Check out "More Gear Please", page 159 of April HCC. DVD-A & progressive scan. Should be less that £500 as well. Any questions about it, ask me as I have used it. Great player, but I'd like to see an HCC compair it to the Tosh SD500E.

And yes, the reason that these players aren't popular yet, is becuase they are so difficult to find. And there are only about 100 DVD-A disks released so far.

Oh I forgot to say that I am looking to replace my Samsung 709 as well.

Also, the reason that all DVD-A players have DD/DTS decoding onboard is because the DSP chip required to decode DVD-A(much more complex than DD or DTS) also decodes the easier DD & DTS as standard. So, don't think you are paying extra for the DD/DTS decoding ability. This wont change until the DSP chips in receivers/processors are powerful enough to decode DVD-A. Who know if or when that will happen.

Hope this is of some use. I have had the Tosh for about a month, it replaces my Sony 725, i got fed up with the layer changes and the occasional lip sinc. The picture from the Sony was excellent but I managed to try them side by side and I am well pleased, i can't notice any difference.
I bought it as I like music and had to try DVDA, I bought one disc and it is excellent.
I also do my own CDs so CDr was also important. I purchased 5 different blank discs and recorded onto them, they all play without any problems.
I have been assured that my multi region mode will have no problems with the RCE issue
I will try MP3s within the next few days and let you know.
I am very pleased, if there are any bugs there is really only one, the remote is awful, it has a big wheel in the center and you have to press it so hard time and time again to get it to do what you ask of it, it looks cheap and nasty and behaves the same way.
I will be purchasing an "all in one" soon so I can live with it for now.
Hope it helps a little, anything else let me know.
