Question regarding upgrade to new console

Hi guys,

I currently have a 40gb ps3 and was debating upgrading to a new slimline ps3.. my question is what will i loose datawise/username/trophies?

i assume the same username can be used as it's just a case of logging in/out of psn on a new console rather than the old. Will i loose my trophies though? if i upgrade to a new console? or are they linked via my psn?... i guess save game data can just be transfered over am i corret in thinking that?

many thanks

I believe that some game saves are locked to a console and can't be copied over, although I'm not sure if doing a full backup allows you to copy them, but everything else can be carried over to a new machine. When I upgraded my hard drive (which is essentially the same process as buying a new machine in the context of this thread), I copied my game saves to a USB stick, then once I'd fitted the new hard drive, I re-entered my username data, restored the saves from the memory stick, and re-downloaded any PSN content I'd bought (you don't have to pay again, obviously).

Backup/restore for a HDD upgrade and backup/restore to a new console are very different. lots of the data does not get transferred when using a new console to restore. The new transfer app in firmware 3.15 is supposed to solve many of the problems. although things like singstar downloads are not covered though (you have to phone up and get them reissued).

I'm thinking of doing the same and trading in my 40gb for a 120gb slim.

The new data transfer facility isn't much help for me as i'd be handing over my 40gb before getting the slim home.

So it looks like my only option would be doing a backup on my 40gb and then restore that to the new slim.

Does anyone know what exactly would be lost? Pictures, settings, downloaded games etc? (i know i can re-download stuff but it would hammer my 10gb limit).

Is there a list of games which lock their saves? I currently have saves for Rag Doll Kung Fu, Tekken 5 DR, WipEout HD, Burnout Paradise, Worms, Dead Space, Fifa 10, Modern Warfare 2, and Playstation Home...

So could I select a new username if I upgraded to a new PS3 Slim?

You'd have to sign up for PSN again with another email adress to change your PSN ID but you'd lose all your trophies, online stats etc.

Or else you could just log into PSN with your current email address and carry on as normal.

go to the far left on the xmb and create a new user. Then sign up for psn under that user. You'll need a different email address to your other psn account.

You can do this up to ten times on any ps3 console (you're limited to ten different users per console if i remember correctly).

My PS3 had the YLOD, so I went and bought a Slim. Unfortunatly I lost all my gamesaves. (No big deal really) I used my current PSN id on the new PS3 and managed to download all the stuff I already paid for, for free.....which is good.

I think if you create a new id you would have to pay for all the DL content again....All the trophies were saved as well

Like someone else has said, upgrading the HDD of an existing PS3 is one thing. The internal backup feature and restore will restore EVERYTHING including the important game saves. I know this as fact because I upgraded my PS3 60GB to 250GB a while ago.

When a bought a slim it was a whole different ball game. Some game saves (depends on which game) are locked and cannot be transferred!! The one that caused me the most pain is Street Fighter IV. Another one is Singstar, must have spent over £150 quid on the Singstore and when I try to download them on my slim from the history it says you can't because the system ID is different (or words to that effect).

I know this as FACT because I did the same thing. When you look at your game save from the XMB under 'Game data' or whatever it is, if you press triangle and information a game save it will tell you if its locked or not. Your primary concern is what games are locked, and how gutted would you be to start all over again???? I can kind of understand why this process in place because of piracy but I can't understand why only some games lock their saves and others don't. Its a right pain in the ass. If you google this you will find a list of game saves which are locked and which ones aren't.

Hope this helps!!
