Question concerning selling your iPhone.

Hello,

I'm in need of some help and advice concerning the selling of an iPhone 3GS. Now I'm still rather new to mobile phones and have never sold one before, I'm currently on Pay As You Go with the O2 network and have a few interested parties wanting to buy my current phone. Obviously this is in preparation for the iPhone 4 which we don't have a set price for just yet. I expect the PAYG price to be rather high so wanted to be prepared to have the cash for launch day.

Now when I sell it, do I have to inform O2 and do I have to provide my sim card with the phone or do can that sim card be used in my next phone (hopefully the iPhone 4). I realise this is a question that as probably been asked many times before, and is easily and obviously answerable, but I'm still not sure.

Some advice on the matter would be hugely appreciated. :D

You can sell the iPhone and you do not need to tell o2. Keep your own sim card and o2 will transfer your current number onto a new micro-sim.

You shouldn't have to inform O2, unless you registered it but doesn't matter. You don't have to give the sim with the phone, up to you if you want to keep the no.

Wipe the phone by doing a restore in iTunes before you sell it!

The phone is yours no need to tell o2

YOU keep your own sim - but will need to get your number/details transferred onto your new micro sim when you get the the iP4 - which will come with a sim (you can do this by calling o2 or online on their website - they switch over your number from old sim to new)

the buyer just inserts his/her sim from o2 into the phone to suit their needs (contract payg whatever)

I'm selling my phone onto a girl at work, but she's wanting it to use with her current vodafone sim - do I need to get the phone unlocked? (from o2)

there's a further complication - she doesn't have a computer - can she use it without iTunes? (she's asked me if I can fill it with music before I hand it over)

Yes you will need to get it unlocked for her to use a Vodafone sim. She can use the iPhone without a computer but will be limited to buying all apps/music etc on the handset and only while using a wifi network if the downloads are larger than 20mb.

O2 will unlock for £15, this will need to be done if she is on Vodafone

And theoretically, if you are setting the iPhone up for her, she wont need itunes.. but in reality she does need itunes for the phone, so she can add her own apps / music/video/pictures AND probably most importantly... install updates from apple

I thought unlocking was free if you're out of contract?

I might just vape the memory completely, update to iOS4 and let her sort it out herself, give her a CD full of mp3's she can put on herself using her parents computer...

If I keep my Sim and buy the iPhone 4, would the months of free 3G coverage still be included?

I ask because wouldn't it be best if I sold the phone with the sim card included and got a new one upon purchasing the new iPhone so I would have another whole year of 3G coverage and add-ons. I believe the new iPhone uses a different sim card anyways (micro-sim) so I wasn't sure. Would I even get the months of free 3G coverage I still have with the new phone. Confusing.

If your careful and keep strict guidelines on how your selling your item Ebay can be perfectly fine. After all your selling the item, you should have the say on how it's sold. I find continued communications between interested serious bidders helps and simple rules like the required feedback needed to bid helps. I also recommend a reserved price as well, might cost more on fees but so worth it if your phone is important to you. It's pretty safe if you are prepared. I sold my previous phone on there, but this time it's different.

Anyone have any idea on the Sim question I asked earlier, asked a few friends and they weren't sure how it works. Thanks.
