We are having Sky HD installed next week and would like to know what we get from Sky for the £60 install fee? We already have Sky+.

Can we ask them to change the whole setup or do they just do what they feel like on the day?
Would it be ok to ask the engineer to fit a new Quad LNB even though we are not having multiroom as we may put the old sky+ box in the bedroom for the free channels or swap the viewing card between boxes (if that is possible?) to watch all the channels on either box.

    :lease:

    Thanks

If you already have Sky+ the likelihood is that you already have a quad LNB as standard. The installer should check the condition of your existing setup and if its OK then it will be a straightforward box swap.

I had sky+...I bought a HD box and just took out the + box and stuck in the HD box...I then had to phone sky upgrade my package and get them to pair the box with my old + viewing card...took 15mins all in ...so get your £60 back :D

"Delivery" includes connecting it up to your TV with the HDMI lead, connecting the phone line, and demonstrating how to use the system. It includes your 12 month guarantee.

A viewing card will work in "the wrong" box but won't show the "Premium" channels.

You can buy a box from a local retailer and get the 12month guarantee...the £60 install fee doesn't give you that.

Sorry...missed your question regarding viewing cards..Viewing card will work and show premium channels if you phone them and ask them to pair the card with the box....2minute job...I don't think they will pair both boxes so you can either...

    1. buy a freeview card for £20 for the SKY+ box.

    2. get multiroom and get all premium channels on the sky+, they send you an additional card and you get charged an additional £10 a month.

both options you'll still need to install the cables into the bedroom though....If the £60 includes that then it's not that bad :)...they may not do that unless you go for multiroom though.

My install last Thursday was last in day. Engineer arrived at 6.40pm...did everything in a great rush...including install of new quad LNB and some very poor drilling in walls (needing filler by me). Fortunately I'd prepared with my own HDMI/Optical leads and checked on everything as he did it.

At end no demonstration ...and I didn't see him even check signal strength. Also premium channels didn't come up. I asked engineer to phone in which he grudingly did...these then came up fairly instantly...but HD channels ie Sky Sports 1 took another 30 mins (after I phoned again to chase myself).

Had to tidy leads and push 50" Pan plasma back to wall space myself...but fortunately all seems absolutley fine and am very pleased with HD pictures.

Incidentally have cut out & retained bar codes & details on side of new cardboard box ...which I see names the installer if I have any future reasons to complain!

You get a 12 month guarantee regardless of whether you buy it from a retailer or get it from Sky.

My hd install was yesterday. I originally had sky + and sky in my bedroom.
The Sky engineer (Bob) was really helpful checked the signal strengh, had a quick look at the lnb to make sure no problems.

Installed the HD box and paired card (nasty moment when the picture went all over the place but my tv doesn't like auto on the sky box now set at 1080i). Paired my old sky + box upstaired. Checked both could record and was off

Demo wasn't required as both my missus and myself had used it round my mates house

Lucky I ordered months ago and wasn't charged for the install. My missus figured out I could have done this myself and that the only problem would have been if the box would have been dodgy.

Bob left me lots of cables including component, spare co-ax

But would I have been happy paying £60 no not really

The £60 install fee gives you a 12 month guarentee on the entire installation not just the SkyHD box, that way if your LNB goes caput after 6 months your covered. If you buy a box and install it yourself your not, only the box has a 12 month Guarentee as I understand it.

When you order Sky HD online or buy phone, do they take your money when you order or when it's installed?

So, there's no way, it seems, of avoiding this dreaded £60 installation fee, is there? £359 for the whole setup is more than I'd ideally have liked to pay.

I thought I saw an offer for the HD box for £199 (as opposed to £299) in the Sky magazine a couple of months back, but may well be mistaken on this front. (I may have isinterpreted the advert and, certainly, the Sky people I've spoken to on the phone tell me that there's never been any such offer.) When do you suppose we'll see the first price drops on the HD box?

My install is this Friday, 1st Sep.

I will be doing a straight swap from Sky+.

I assume I will be asked to sign that I am happy with the installation when the engineer has finished?

Am I right in expecting him to perform ALL the tasks listed below before I sign?

Can anyone see anything I have missed?

    1. Check LNB & replace if needed
    2. " Cables " "
    3. Check signal strength and re-align dish if necessary
    4. Perform latest software update
    5. Check TV link to upstairs is working
    6. Phone Sky to "Pair up Card"
    7. Make sure all HD channels are working

I had Sky+ when I got HD and the installer said he had to renew everything, put a new 8 way (octo) LNB on and rewired, very neatly, all holes filled etc.

A note re viewing cards, he swapped mine and I don't have film channels, Sky said I need to pay extra, can anyone tell me what comes as standard with the HD £10 package, I have one movie amd one sport on SD.

mines being installed thursday (and i only ordered it today) ;) ,

didnt even bother with sky, just rang my local sky retailer and he is fitting it for me thursday & not charging me for installation :D .

he told me... if you already have sky+ there is no need to replace the dish or cables. unless they are damaged.

    Kev

I was given nothing to sign..Which now I come to think of it was strange (as I always have in the past) As per the above that was what the engineer did for me...At least I never paid £60.00!!!!

When demand tails off and drops significantly below the supply level, and even then probably only through free install offers initially. I can think of no other reason to drop the price, even in the run up to Christmas. Other than installation charges, I'd be surprised if prices are reduced during the first year after launch.

That seems very odd. I have always been asked to sign before - SkyDigital and Sky+

If a signature is required I wonder who signed yours??????

Note for self  - ask engineer to confirm that he will need a signature before he goes.

I will not be prepared to sign if everything is not working as it should.

Slightly on same topic, i have normal sky digital, never got sky plus and got my hd tv coming on thursday and sky coming on saturday to install hd,
what will he do to my setup, does the dish get replaced or rewired, does he bring all the cables needed (is it better to buy a good quality hdmi cable instead of the stock cable he will no doubt bring)
can someone let me know so i know the engineer does everything he is supposed to

Well at the moment I've just got standard Sky so the £60 installation fee isn't to bad for me. My current signal strength is useless (any hint of a cloud bang goes the channels) so he is going to have to change the lnb, re-run another cable and get my signal up so I.m getting my moneys worth .
