I'm shortly to buy a HC receiver (Denon/Yamaha/Marantz). Initially I will wish to drive a pair of full-range main speakers (Kef Cara) untill I buy a sub and some sats. Can receivers generally be programmed for either of these combinations, or does the ".1" mean that you have to use a sub, and only the top end will come out of the L/R connections?
    TIA. Alan

You can drive full-range speakers (front speakers set to LARGE) and you can even omitt a sub (Subwoofer = NO) so that the .1 is send to the fronts instead and hence no signal will be lost.

In fact even later you can leave the fronts driven full-range while only the .1 (LFE) will be send to the subwoofer.
Bass of other speakers that are set to SMALL will be send to the subwoofer, too, and not affect the fronts.
