Hi all, I was quite shocked to hear today that the PS3 does not output 720p for Blu ray films...why is this? I like most people own a 1366 X 768 set. I also noticed that a change has been made on how you set resolution via PS3. you tick/unitck boxes that your screen supports. So if I want to have it always on 720p I would have to untick 1080i...right? (as the PS3 automatically sets it to 1080i as it is now the highest)...but then if I have 1080i unticked I will not be able to view Blu ray in HD as it doesnt do 720p...am I right in saying this? Is there another way round this? What do you guys think best to do. do you use 1080i for games? and if so, why, I mean 1366 X 768 is closer to 720p, right?? I am not having a go or anything, I am just clarifying, I am so new, and so confused. Do you think they will update 720p support for Blu ray films??
Thanks guys,
Stuart :)

i think the answer is 1080i generally looks better than 720p on a 1366x768 set. (basing on my sky hd box, and my rca hddvd)

at least it does on mine.

so its nothing to worry about, as far as im concerned

as for games, resistance tries to force it to 720p anyway and looks absolutley horrific when you run it in 1080i as the textures are 720p

Thanks for the reply...so would you say then that 720p is best for games and 1080i for films?
Does anyone know a site where you can find out what the games best res. are to run at, and what title supports what?
Thanks again! :)

It's not as simple as 1080i will look better than 720p all the time - it is equipment and gear specific. What looks best on one screen may not look the best on another.

I have a panasonic px60 my res is 1024 x 768.

How will the blu-ray look on my better in 1080i or 720p

you would need to see if you tv supports 1080i and 720p . I bet it does.most plasmas are lower then hdtv spec , so they internaly downscale to the proper resolution.
stooahee: you have to tick also 1080i as suported resolution. so this way, games that are 1080p will show you 1080i on your tv (same as bluray) so at least it will show better gfx)

as the PS3 doesnt run Blu-ray movies at 720p the choice is 480p or 1080i on a 720p display so i know which i would go for. Iv tried the ps3 on my bro's 32" sammy at 1080i and doesnt look much different then my 46W2000 at 1080p

Thanks again for clarying that for me! I will be sure to tick 1080i as supported when I get a PS3 then! LOL!

Going back to another question...does anyone know of a site at all for PS3 games that lets you know what is the best res to run them at/ what they were intended for??

On a good TV, 1080i should look substantially better than 720, in terms of resolution. The reason? Overscan. Most TVs chop off a significant portion of the image (historical - due to chopping off lines the broadcasters don't want you to see), so you're actually seeing less resolution (significantly less than 700 lines) than your TV can show (768) when you select 720p input. By switching to 1080i, you're sure to get as much out of your 1080 source as possible on a 768 panel. If your TV does not look better at 1080, then the processing/scaling of the TV is poor.

I'm refering to games stuff, not TV broadcasts.

It's only a 32" so at my viewing distance there is no discernable difference between 1080i/720p. You may already know that the Bravia 32V2000 series was voted best in class in its price range with stunning picture display & strongly recommended on these very forums.
