I am in PAL (576 lines) territory, and have a 854x480 projector. My question is, if I play an NTSC disc through my multi region pal dvd player, would it look better than watching a PAL dvd?

Theoretically it shoud do, your PJ panel was designed with NTSC in mind, but it might depend much more on the quality of the transfer than the number of lines you have and whether any downscaling is going on. Buy a R! film, and hire the PAL one, and let us know what you think.
