With reference to the HCC news item about the new Sony Qualia 004 pj.

I see its a true HD panel, but is this likely to yield better pq for us Europeans (if ever released here) with our poor old SD signals?

I've seen the side-effects on my own pj of upscaling to 720, whats it going to be like at 1080 ? I suppose we could get exited when/if HD broadcasting/DVD takes off but I'm sure they'll be on gen. 3/4/5 by then.

    Thoughts?

    neil.

It would be nice to see D-VHS (D-Theater) in europe wouldn't it and I don't mean via inflated grey imports. But, then arn't they 720, so even they'd have to be up-scaled?

I thought D-Theatre was 1080i??? Anyway, if you have read the findings of Joe Kane's tests regarding D-VHS, I hope this is not going to be the HD standard for Europe!

It's not that it is bad, just that it failed many of his tests. He found WM9 to equal or kick its arse in every area! He will be releasing DVE in both 720p and 1080i in WM9 apparently?

Most of the D-Theater tapes I have seen are 1080i, and with Euro1080i appearing very soon you'll have some live material to watch also.

As retro said D-Theater tapes are 1080i
It's just Hi-def stuff that has been recorded from ABC onto D-VHS tapes that will be in 720p this is the format that they use not 1080i

I (& many others) have Euro 1080i running perfectly @ 1920x1080 now so a native resolution panel PJ would be nice :)

BluRay and Windows Media 9 (as seen on Terminator 2) are other possible sources of HD. Playing a HD X-Box or 1920x1080 PC game would be cool too :smashin:

I suspect someone who can afford £25k for the Qualia 004 will be able to get HD material one way or another!

I look forward to seeing one of these units.
Get your sat dishes ready for Euro1080i. We still need some HDTV set top boxes on the european market though.

Thanks for the link, but its dead. The name is unrecognised by two different internet DNS servers that I tried. Hopefully it will come back up soon.
